Can anybody recommend a 7-seater or 6-seater SUV! Have been looking at rav4 and Honda CRV, and one Volvo XC90. They are all under $19K.Mainly looking at one that can take rural to camping with whole family.I am leaning towards rav4 just for reliability.

Seven seats in a Rav 4 or CRV! I wasn't even aware that was an option on them - there certainly isn't much space for a third row back there.

Despite the story's the RAV won't be any more reliable than the XC90 and its not a fraction of the vehicle the XC is.

I was told that volvo tyres are REALLY expensive.

I've never seen a Rav4 come in a 7 seater either.
We are currently looking aswell and i really like the look of the hyundai something (I forget LOL). The prados have a good reputation but come with a pricetag. There is a thread down a bit further that I started which has some good info in it about 7 seater 4wds.

Google would suggest they're 225/70R16 on an early XC90 and there appears to be some cheap options available. Sure it'll probably be expensive for a quality set but that goes for any 4wd.

Also mone, I suspect you may not have actually driven the XC if you are still leaning towards the RAV. If thats the case I strongly suggest you go and drive one as that may make for an easier decision. The whole thing with the Volvo is its a much more expensive vehicle new and is the better buy secondhand due to its high initial depreciation. (It won't depreciation very fast at all from here on in). The 5 Cylinder petrol engine they use is very good on fuel and exceptionally reliable. Its also nice and straight forward for servicing.
The only problem with Volvo's in NZ is the parts are a little bit dearer because we don't have a lot of 3rd party parts importers. Parts however are still available easily enough. I get around this problem by just ordering my parts online. The extra little bit you pay in parts is also completely here nor there in terms of your actual running costs so not worth worrying about.
Be aware that you will encounter many wives tails about any European vehicle from those in the industry trying to sell you a Japanese import.

Also, when you say "camping" do you really need something with serious 4WD abilities or just some ground clearance! The reason being is all those bigger 4WD's tend to cost quite a bit more to run than the likes of a decent people mover, you have to weigh up whether the extra $1500 a year or whatever it works out to be is worth while. If going for a people mover I really like the VW Touran, its so cheap to run, well featured, safe and a joy to live with for day to day driving. The Touran "Cross" would likely suit you better with the higher ground clearance but might be a struggle to get for your budget.

Also, poster1 the Honda scores significantly better in reliability survey's than the RAV. I meant to say the RAV won't be any more reliable than the Honda in my above post, just realized my mistake in my hurry. The Volvo should still be fine reliability wise, the engine is excellent for reliability and the transmissions are generally O.K so long as you service them as and when you should. You do get a few Volvo's with blown automatics but its usually a result of abuse and neglect.
The Volvo is really quite a different kettle of fish to the other two. Its a proper luxury vehicle, twice the price new and a significantly nicer vehicle. Its also the best value for money of the 3 sechondhand.
You just have to be mindfull with the Volvo that some of the prestige dealerships will try and take you for a ride with regard to servicing and repairs. If you can find a good independent garage in your area that deals with Volvo then that would be the way to go. Best to drive all 3 first though in my opinion.
Oh and if it comes down to the Honda or the RAV I would go Honda every time. Nicer vehicle, the Rav is out dated and over hyped.

THanks, are you referring to Hyundai Tucson or something! They look pretty spacious too for a medium sized suv

Have a look at the Suzuki XL7. 7 seats and aproper 4wd which the others you have mentioned are not. 2.7 V6 which is not overly powerfull but more than adequate for the vehicle. Costs a bit more to run but the versatility makes it worth it. We have had one for 3 years now and it has taken us all over the South Island both on and off road with no problems at all. The only thing when using it off road is to remember it is a bit longer in the wheel base and to keep that in mind with approach angles and sharp ridges.

They are, but I haven't seen any with 7 seats.

Consider the Mitsubishi Outlander or its badge engineered cousin the Peugeot 4007 which has a diesel engine option.

There's a time for less and a time for more. when it comes to ratios in a transmission its always a time for more. but you know that already driving a Toyota.

I thought it was the other way around, the Pug was a re-badged outlander!

Yes. Pug is a rebadged Outlander with petrol or Peugeot / Citroen HDi diesel option.
