does this seem right to you guys!car gets broken into and wallet, glasses and GPS gets stolen. Lovely! Now AMI says the wallet and glasses are household items and subject to a $250 excess and the GPS is a car accessory so thats a seperate claim and subject to a $300 excess. In other words making it not worth claiming -the girl on the phone says with a smile in her voice. In my humble opinion it was all one event, one police reference no. and should only be subject to one excess payment - am i being thick or is AMI taking the proverbial!

ring them back back and tell them you have rung around other insurance comps and they say its one event, tell them you plan on changing insurance comps otherwise.

Sounds like AMI wife no longer has an engagement ring as they refused the claim for it being lost a few years back any excuse to not pay but premiums go up continually tho

I wouldn't have said you're being thick.however you are claiming under two different policies, and both of those policies have an excess.

Hi - the first response (from the Ins Coy) isn't always the correct one. For the person you spoke to, to make an evaluation like that without further information is interesting. There are two things to consider; 1) A large proportion of Insurance Companies rule that in the situation that two policies or more are being claimed on for the one event, then only the higher of the two excesses is to be paid. This is quite common with car breakins, where damage is incurred to the lock (Car claim) and your stuff is stolen (Contents claim). They are not bound to this through legislation, it is their policy wording which will refer. Check your policy wording. 2) The first assumption from the Ins Coy is that your GPS is a car accessory, by nature of its use or intended use. If your GPS is removed from the car (except for when it was stolen obviously), then you could argue that it forms part of your contents. Your basis for argument on this point would need to show that the GPS can be (and is) used separate to the car i.e. handheld or in another vehicle or boat. If this isn't the case, then they are correct that it is a car accessory. I hope this helps - the first point may be the best one to pursue. Cheers

why is he thick! Most insurers only charge 1 excess in this situation

simple really, wallet & glasses are personal items not fitted to the car , GPs is an accessory & comes under the cars insurance .So 2 different policies .

He/she asked if they were being thick.and I said I wouldn't have said so. Problem!

I am assuming your excess are high because you are either under 25 years of age, or you have elected to take the larger excess in each case to keep the premium of each policy low!
However, I would have thought the insurance company would have applied only one (the larger) excess in this case.

From previous experiences with my insurance company, a one event excess only applies , toloss or damage relating to a claim for house andcontents , when you suffer loss of personal effects relating to contents and a loss of a vehicle accesssory which is under your vehicle policy, you will be subject to 2 excess's.

Tell them you'll move companies. That usually does the trick!

Moving compaines wont help. Its been said a few times already, read your policy wording, cause i bet you didnt when you signed it. If someone broke into your car and nicked your wallet and glasses but didnt damage the car, what policy would you claim under! Yes its annoying but its the way insurance works.

Insurance companies are sick and tired of paying for stupid peoples GPS systems that get stolen. a friend had one stolen and ins would only pay a second hand value on it oh and it had a $500 excess thanks very much. if you don't want your gps to get stolen DON'T LEAVE IT IN THE BLARDY CAR IN FULL SIGHT!
or maybe you could do what we did in the old days.learn to read a map.

Personally I just remove it everytime I go out, never had a break in. Same goes for anything valuable put it out of sight. In plain view is asking for it IMHO.

Tell them it's a mobile GPS which you don't use in the car very often so it's actually covered under the contents insurance.
I mean come on, they were the ones who started being nit picky!

This may help you. I am insured with the AMI, 2 cars, 1x Discovery, trailer, 2x motorbikes, home & contents, you know, the usual crap a man has to have. Few years back I took my new Freelander for a swimming lesson,,,,, It failed miserably lmao, never trust a 4x4 thats controlled by electronics and then drive into the sea haha. Anyway, after the hysterical laughter had slowed down to a OH CRAP, my CD's were in the glove box, dam it! and my phone is still sat on the dash board. I managed to get it towed out by a mate but alas it was way too late. AMI paid out for a total loss on the car, new GPS, 20x CD's at $25 per disc (agreed value) car charger, and my new Motorola phone that also failed the swimming lesson. Excess was just on my car cover, never even mentioned my contents, full payout within 7 days. Still by far the better company to deal with IMO.

ring her back, and tell her that the GPS unit is not used stricly for the car. it is used as an accessory when cycling, tramping and for a number of other activities, thus making it a household item you use often, not a 'car' item.
