Yes, definately, 2 stroke or 4 stroke

jimdaddy, Aug 11, 11:42pm
has anyone owned an RMX! i'd like to know how they compare to say an RM or KX250.i used to own an XR250 with the 280 kit, it was a great bike but my ride improved drastically when i bought the RMZ, unfortunately ive already spent a heap on the RMZ after i drowned it lol. valves were about $200 a piece i think.

I know a few guys who ride off road, all prefer 4 stroke (including the guys who currently have 2's!). Torque over revs any day (for this application).

bigfatmat1, Aug 12, 5:58am
2 strokes run upside down! good for backflips

paul861, Aug 12, 6:14am
my xr400 on avgas smells heaps better tho

dr.doolittle, Aug 12, 6:45am
It boils down to the type of riding you do.
I'm getting on now but still think I'm a teenager. So I've gone back to a two stroke. My top two inches still thinks it's pullet-proof but the rest knows otherwise. I went from a RM 250 2 stroker to a Husky TC570 for a change a few years ago, because 'everyone' had a 4 stroke & I wasn't going to be out done. Great bike in a straight line(Pissed all over everyone) but VERY heavy otherwise.(Even in the air). Gone back to acr250 2 stroke because I now 'sound' like I'm going fast, 'feel' like it's fast, and, heaven forbid, if I suck in my beer gut, I even 'look' fast'. So there!

that phantom 'more torque' that novice riders think they have on their 4 strokes.

just did some quick spec reading, found figures of 33 lb torque for a 450f, vs 28 for a 250 2 stroke - yet guys will tell you a 250f makes more torque than a 250 2 stroke- perception i guess.the reality is its a lot harder to stall a 2 stroke in the tight stuff compared to a 4 stroke, and starting hot 4 strokes in shitty conditions is never fun.

bigfatmat1, Aug 12, 9:21am
why do you need torque on something that weights 90kg I ride my bike up some pretty steepfirebreaks that my mates 4 strokes don't have the power to get up.

thats where I ride bit differnt to the flat land i use to ride in christchurch.

smac, Aug 12, 10:11am
Those power figures are at what revs!

jimdaddy, Aug 12, 4:29pm
thats also something i wondered about, is it really easier to stall a 4 stroke! and ive also heard its not good to holda 2 stroke at high revs for ages then slow down real qiuck. something about the sudden lack of lubrication!

r15, Aug 12, 8:09pm
you google it, i cbf.

yes its harder to stall a 2 stroke, part of the reason for this is because on a 2 stroke the engine fires twice as often, meaning that it doesnt have to turn over a whole rotation without fireing as part of its normal function, or put it this way you can 'save it from stalling' a lot easier.

only 125s etc and small 2 strokes have to be rung out to make them work, ktm's 200exc's(or 250 or 300) are made for trail riding, and then the proper mx bikes- the yz / kx /rm / cr are also all good on tight bush

its not good to run any engine at redline for a prolonged period, but going full noise then backing off is excactly what is done at beach racing, and only incorrectly jetted bikes ever have an issue

frytime, Aug 12, 9:40pm
as alread said, 4's have better bottom end, 2 smokes have a kick half way up the rev range. 4 would be my pik to starting out riding as more controllable. 2 is my pick tho, much simpler engine and cheaper to buy/ full rebuild

helpless, Aug 12, 9:52pm
I just wonder how anyone could like the sound of a 2 stroke overa 4.No comparison.4stroke for Enduros.(mud/bog/huge greasy hills),,2 or 4 for MX /open track hare type scrambles.,,(Debatable).

jimdaddy, Aug 14, 1:05pm
im loving all this info! what about fouling plugs! is this just if theres too much oil in the mix! im pretty sure my RMZ valve clearances have shifted or something, most likely bent the valves, not looking forward to paying for that. i gave it a bit of a kick yesterday but never started it.

bigmacca, Aug 14, 11:26pm
i love my old ktm 360 2 smoke.tonnes of grunt, heaps of noise and smoke and eats most big 4strokes in a straight line and most corners when the rider is on the ball haha.and only 4 gears so dont have to do heaps of gearchanges.

tantric5, Aug 15, 2:23am
I had a 650 4 stroke sport quad with a Pro Circuit pipe and that thing sounded mean as in the forest. Its like comparing a v8 with a rotary re 2 stroke/4 stroke lol

this is FUNNY if you havent already seen it.

jimdaddy, Aug 15, 3:00am
haha yup seen that, emialed the link to some friends, they didnt think it was funny tho.

rebekahn85, Dec 15, 9:14am
i've always had 250 strokes, and have just gone to a 400 exc. i dont get a lot of time to ride , so when i do like to make the most of it, and on the 2 stroke i used to suffer from arm pump (i know sounds like a cop out, but when ure m8s are infrount of u and u have a pro circut pipe u just have to open it right up). the 400 is a lot more useable. mayb im just getting old but the 4 seems a lot nice to ride and u actually lap faster even when u think u dont. so thus far 4. u just have to do preventitive maintaince instead of leting it go bang, valve clearinces, oil change .ect

bigboi22, Dec 16, 1:39am
had a 2stroke cr250 back in thew 90s thort it was so quick and just got bak on the seen and bought a kxf450 i must say being 4stroke i thort it would be lazy but holly sht was i wrong wat a evil weapon.4stroke is the way of the future just sux gota do piston etc every 80ish hours

bwg11, Dec 16, 2:01am
250 and under - 2 stroke, over 250 - 4 stroke with few exceptions.

wrong2, Dec 16, 3:19am
& they would be the euro 360's

excellent combination of torque & power

bigfatmat1, Dec 16, 3:59am
disagree a 2 stroke on race gas and synthetic two smoke oil smells even better

countrypete, Dec 16, 7:05am
The funny thing is that most people over-rate their personal skill level, and believe they need the bestest, fastest, lightest meanest bike to display their skill.Truth is that in most cases any new (or modern) bike will have power and handling characteristics that will out-perform all but the top riders.

If you want serious performance with reliability, go for a DR-Z400.You see these at all the trail rides in their hundreds, and for most riders will perform just as good as a CRF or RMZ etc.

Yep, people are now going to come in with "it's too heavy" or "it's too soft" etc but the reality is it has all the performance and handling that most can handle, while being basically bulletproof. And the bloody thing has an electric leg!Good for us old b'stards

I do agree tho, that a 2-stroke sounds and smells like a "proper" bike.

matarautrader, Jun 12, 7:59pm
Countrypete has it right. For us old buggers DRZ400 is the way to go. Its just like me. slow, heavy and old. Do a ride, chuck it in the shed, drag it out, do another ride. Low maintenance compared to many other 4 strokes.
