Hi Phil,

I have been looking at gen 2 Pajeros and noticed that many have Super Select with a centre diff lock.

What is SS like in terms of reliability! Do all SS models have the centre diff lock!

I looked at a 4d56t one that had SS and the centre diff light on the display was flashing orange in 4x4 which didn't look normal. Also, was pretty weepy with oil from the transfer case not to mention the rear seal.

I had a gen 1 4d56t for a couple of years so I know how oily they get, finding a dry one seems like a mission.

Cheers!

Super Select is basically on-the-fly switchable 4WD, as far as I know they all have the center diff locked when 4WD is engaged, which is why you dont run them around at all times in 4WD mode.

They are reasonably reliable in terms of strengh of the diffs, driveshafts, CV joints, and gearboxes but the only real issue with them is the vacuum system used to engage/disengage the front diff and the transfer case/center diff. It consists of a bunch of solenoids and vacuum accumular canisters and a small ECU. If the ECU senses something is not running as it should, it will flash lights on the dash - usually the front wheel lights will flash most commonly as the front diff doesn't engage/disengage. Usually the faults are fixed by replacing leaking vacuum hose or punctured/broken vacuum accumulators, very rarely is it anything other than them.
