First race for the 'Madaz' tomorrow

morrisman1, Dec 18, 8:13am
Well its not really a race but the Mazda 121 gets to go on the track so that will be run putting it through its paces. I spent the afternoon making the exhaust for it, its 2.1/4" pipe with two resonators in and a side exit in front of the R/R wheel. It certainly sounds the part now so Im happy about that.

Driveshafts have twisted about 10° I can see from looking at the line that I drew when they were put in. The twist is linear across the section welded of about 1.5" so Im not concerned about it at this stage but it is something I will keep my eye on. Next step is getting shafts cut to length of suitable material and having splines put on each end.

Heres a couple pics of the beast:

why! lol

Because he can!

morrisman1, Dec 18, 9:01am
Never underestimate.

When I took it up the road last, 3/4 of the 300m journey was wheelspin, then I had to slow down to turn around

Good on ya, looks nice.

Maybe something you could drive on holiday aye (o:

morrisman1, Dec 18, 10:20pm
Driveshaft broke again. Im sick of this! This time I am going to widen the track width to fit standard driveshafts so I don't have to worry about them

a.woodrow, Dec 18, 10:36pm
is there room to slide a section of pipe on and weld at each end!

morrisman1, Dec 18, 10:41pm
yes but that was the first attempt and it failed too.

a.woodrow, Dec 18, 10:42pm
Have you been welding it yourself! maybe the welder isn't getting enough heat into the welds

johnf_456, Dec 18, 10:45pm
Already had my own one over in Australia last month so not anytime soon.

morrisman1, Dec 18, 10:56pm
I am confident that the weld job was done as best as possible, it was welded by a local machine shop. It just seems that there is too much torque for a modified driveshaft to cope with and hence we will be making the standard ones fit by moving the wheels out each side. I have my plan of action laid out for that and its not as complicated as it may sound, just need to make up a new lower control arm which is about 50mm longer and then move the top strut mount out by 30mm. This will help with camber too and also prevent the wheel rubbing that I am occasionally getting.

fordcrzy, Dec 19, 8:28am
why not just have a custom driveshaft made! would be easier than control arms etc etc etc

morrisman1, Dec 19, 8:38am
because a custom set of driveshafts is about a grand, which is more than I can afford to spend on such a car.

I found shorter driveshafts today which are off a ford laser 1.5 and have installed one side but the other side is about an inch too long unfortunately. A bit of a bummer. I will still have to widen the track but not as much now with the shorter driveshafts. An inch outwards at the bottom will probably be sufficient, Ill have a look at my options tomorrow when I have energy but for now. Beer.

the-lada-dude, Dec 19, 7:19pm
you never heat treated the weld did you !

morrisman1, Dec 19, 8:04pm
I didnt do the weld, the machine shop did it

the-lada-dude, Dec 20, 12:53am
ok then, you didn't weld it !so the m/c shop are SPECIALIST welders, yeah ! i
i'm sure i mentioned b4 that you would need special rods and heat treatment
+ you would have to know what sort of alloyed steel it is to see if it is weldable at all!

the-lada-dude, Dec 20, 12:59am
frig me ! you'ld have won your fist race by now if you'ld ripped that piece of japenese shit out of the engine bay and replaced it with a fiat punto motor!
more HP better fuel econ, and you wont have to buy any bits for it because they will take a jolly good thrashing, and come back for more

pieman33h, Dec 20, 8:18am
i have been reading about the welding, we used to alter stockcar axles, fairly roughly, by cutting, veeing them out then welding with flux cored wire, plenty of heat and sleeving over the top with some mild steel pipe. Nothin fancy at all, never broke one - and believe me if anybody can break something it is me!
