wired up the standard water temp gauge and as soon as you turn the key it goes str8 up to hot whats wrong, im stumped

The wire that goes to the sender unit or the sender unit itself is shorted to earth!

oh kgot one earthed on the chassis and one onto the thermostat will redo i think

Think it should be power to one side of guage, other to sender unit on engine and thats it

by the way duin this on behalf of a mate who is flipping out, out in the shed lol looking at it yes the old power wire has heaps of holes and exposed wire let you know how we go

Correct the sender unit runs through an earth, not the positive feed.

Yes you do have it wired wrong, if you got one to chassis earth and one to sender unit on motor it should not work at all as there is no power to the gauge
