So I'm thinking I might shout the Commodore to a new set of plugs and a bit of a tune up before we go away for Christmas. (2006 SV8).Call into the local Holden dealership to get a bit of a price and book it in.No service thanks, just a tune up.Out comes the calculator.that'll come to $424.30 PLUS gst.For those of you not into GST that means eff all change out of 500 bucks. The spark plugs alone came to over $300.I'll get back to you I said and got out of there before they charged me for parking outside their workshop.I'll get to the point. I know I can get 8 sparkplugs for the Commodore for way less than $300 so would it be too cheeky to rock up to a garage with my car and new sparkplugs and ask them to do a tune up on the car (labour only)! How many of you mechanics would or wouldn't do it!

Just say you were planning on doing it all yourself but are running out of time before you head away for the holidays

LOL yea some of it's getting a tad nasty in price. Was in BNT this arvo when a guy come in for a single headlight bulb = $135 & then got told it's best to replace in pairs ;-(

Standard sort of pricing on Iridium/Platinum NGK or similar can be about $44 each. There is $352 in parts alone. And as for headlight bulbs, in the previous comment, a lot of HID bulbs can be in the hundreds for a bulb quite easily if you're not buying the budget rubbish ones

just go and buy the plugs from Repco it should say on a sticker under the bonnet what spark plug to use, LS1's are very easy to do plugs on it doesn't take long just do it yourself, oh and merry Christmas to ya mate and enjoy your time away, fyi DO NOT touch Bosch ones, had a set in my Super 6 lasted about 8,000ks and they were buggered use nothing but NGK (Holden recommends NGK anyway)

TBH that quote probably isn't too far off. As mentioned $40~ a plug, thats $320 there. Don't skimp out and get standard plugs, specially on an 8.
Depends also on what else is done on the "Tune Up". I would think you would be looking at checking all fluid levels, pressures, cleaning air filter, clean throttle body, fuel tank additive, resetting ECU/KAM/Whatever the adaptive learning on a Holden is, checking brakes, susp components etc . there is easily 1-2hours labour there, at what the going rate for a dealer is these days around $80-90 .
Most places will let you supply parts though and still happy to do the work for ya.

I did the same on my V8, I bought the NGKs at Repco (got a mates staff price at $22 each) and asked holden to put them in for me (with the fuel sensor repair) at the time. All good except for the plug lead they broke and charge $65 for a new one!

Ahhh the short memories of some people.Iridium plugs might be $40 odd dollars a piece but how long do they last!150K!Add up the price of 7 sets of standard plugs plus the labour to change them every 20K like you used to have to and then get back to us with whether you think long life plugs are good value or not.

Pfffft Holden drivers. They might look phobic but they are just too keen to bend over and.
Set of 8 plugs like that should set you back about $120 delivered to your door.

why do you want to put irr/plugs in an engine where you can access the plugs easily ! with modern spark generation std ngk's wlii last 60-100 thouk's( you may have to regap @ 40-50 thou but wont be much )

its a holden! they never die, shop around its not like there a BMW that has to go to the dealer I have a old 86 vk commy i did it myself plugs were $6 for extreme automotive, don't go to repco cos its is true what it stands for And a mechanic should have an issues with the parts beeing supplied, if they do their probely doing something dodgey

BNT's going to get a big thumbs up from me.Called into to Repco, got a price for the NGK plugs that are recommended for the Holden.$51 each.Went round to BNT.No sweat mate we can do them for $35 each.Pretty good saving when you're buying 8.

And Merry Christmas to you too Scotty.Unfortunately Repco don't see a lot of my money. Not too keen on the service of our local store and their pricing doesn't exactly spin my wheels (as in the above post).

Some Toyotas have to remove the bumper also. Fitted a new headlight to a late model BMW about 4 months ago $8500.00 to do lol customer did not even bat a eyelid over the price.
