Why not fix it, it would be a pain the . trying to push the car out of a parking spot everytime. Or even trying to turn around in a tight street and do a 3 point turn.

twinroses, Feb 7, 6:02pm
How many motorbikes have a reverse gear but still get warrants!

johnf_456, Feb 7, 6:04pm
But motorbikes are meant to be pushed factory. Like comparing a truck and bicycle.

the_chooky, Feb 7, 6:08pm
Ha. never seen them check reverse, so probly not.

im_andrew, Feb 7, 6:24pm
They do check reverse lights though, if they are fitted.

phillip.weston, Feb 7, 6:28pm
I failed a WOF for reverse not working. Forwards gears didn't happen to work at the same time either, it was an intermittent fault.

rob_man, Feb 7, 7:28pm
Handbrakes work pretty good for turning around.

jsbike, Feb 7, 10:01pm
What part of the wof sheet has the X next to it! I went and asked a workshop about this when my reverse failed, the mech spend AGES looking through his wof books and eventually told me to come back the next day. On my return, both him and his boss has looked through everything they could and told me that they could not fail me for no reverse as it was not a safety feature. A lot of places that are drive in one side, and out the other wouldnt even put it in reverse anyway.

At vtnz Takanini, after the brake test they drive the car about 10m forwards, slam the brakes on and then reverse back to where they came from. Surely they are checking something with that test!

jsbike, Feb 8, 7:31am
becuase they dont have rollers to test the brakes, like Marshlands BP.

elect70, Feb 8, 10:42am
Can push a mini, i did for 6months till I could afford to fix it on my measly apprentice wage .

siren676, Feb 8, 1:39pm
Nope they do that test after they do the run on the rollers

tuttyclan, Feb 8, 1:56pm
I drove a 1986 Nissan C20 Vanette for a while with no reverse. The oldcolumn change manual 4 speed. There was two ways you could get it in though one was to turn off the engine to engage reverse or you could drive it up to about 10km an hour and slam it into reverse using the clutch of course.

jsbike, Feb 8, 2:00pm
really! I guess they must be testing reverse, though if it failed I like to know where they would put the X on the wof sheet as its not a safety item or a listed fuction it must have on the wof sheet.

tuttyclan, Feb 8, 2:04pm
I have driven automatics with no reverse.Makes you think ahead about where you drive the car and how you park it.Worst case scenareo is to get out and push it backwards.

lyonruge, Feb 8, 3:50pm
Well, when we do a stall test to check the handbrake, we have to do it in reverse as well as forward, which would mean that the vehicle isnt capable of completing the check, therefore, it cant fail, but will be an incomplete inspection and wont pass either.

sandypheet, Feb 8, 3:53pm
They would be testing the vehicle sensitivity of the seat belts.

falcon15, Feb 8, 4:44pm
There is a box called engine/driveline in the bottom right corner of the check sheet it could be failed under that. I will have a look in the virm at work tomorrow but i think it is a requirement to have reverse on cars

carmedic, Feb 8, 8:12pm
A reverse gear is NOT required for a WoF on general vehicles.

No it can??

lyonruge, Feb 9, 5:26am
Well, unless you become my WOF auditor, i think i'll keep doing it the way he wants it done. Oh, i'm not talking about vintage cars either, dont be pedantic.

mrfxit, Feb 9, 6:03am
A brother had that situation back in the old days of a "wof testing station" & went a bit futher.
Towed his car in with a dead motor, made himself available to push the car to where ever it was needed (he's a big strong fella).
They moaned & bitched but after checking the wof reg's (of the time) found that because they had self powered brake rollers & HE supplied the nessasary motive power to move the vehicle through the testing station, they couldn't stop him getting a wof on the basis of a non working engine.

r15, Feb 9, 6:08am
was there a cert plate with his name on it under the engine section! lol

lyonruge, Feb 9, 6:09am
They would not have been able to complete the test as they wouldnt be able to test the exhaust, brake booster etc were working, it wouldnt fail but also should not have been issued a wof due to incomplete test.

mrfxit, Feb 9, 6:10am
LOL . you ARE a young fella, aye ;-)

.
.lyonruge
.Ditto for him ^^ too

mrfxit, Feb 9, 6:12am
A lot of cars back then DIDN'T have brake boosters & they didn't have exhaust testing then either . . Blimin silly whipper snappers don't understand what it was like back then
