auction 351826993
Yes I know it's not motoring, but wow.

ginga4lyfe, Feb 8, 9:18pm
Isn't that price a liiiitttllle overboard!

morrisman1, Feb 8, 9:31pm
That could possibly be the only remains of the P+W terraces if genuine. Fully worth that price once authenticated.

kaymay88, Feb 8, 9:34pm
If someone was to come into motoring and say 'look at this auction, for an old peice of shit, why would anyone wanna pay over $100,000 for an old heap like this', and pasted a link to a genuine GTHO phase 3 coon, Im sure many here would jump up and down and go on about how it IS worth that, and why.
To some, its a collectible car with much history, and valuable due to rarity. to others its a 30+ year old piece of shit.
I dunno what the deal is with the auction mentioned, but im sure that to some geologists wanting to study rare anomolies in the geological areas of that part of New Zealand from the past, that sample would be extremely interesting.

Value is in the eye of the beholder. Id argue that a phase 3 coon is worth no more than two thousand dollars, TOPS. because it means absolutely nothing to me. However To someone else, it could be priceless

andrea_w, Feb 8, 9:40pm
The seller said it is "bordering on priceless" and parting with $1m would not be a life changing event.
Instead of selling it, the seller should DONATE it to a museum so everyone can enjoy "a very rare sample of one of the most famous natural wonders of the world".
I'd hate to speculate the reasons why the seller needs to profit from this.

.thats if the item up for auction is even genuine. Seems to be a few fairly blunt and evasive replies to the questions.
It may well be genuine, but the seller is not doing a good job of putting everyones mind at ease.

I'm surprised a Maori Tribe hasn't come along & tried to claim it lol.

noswalg, Feb 9, 5:28am
What will sell 1st the $970,000 72' camaro or the over $1'000'000 bottle of coloured sand!

mk3zephyr, Feb 9, 5:37am
Have you read the Questions and answers!, seems there was a heap of those sold in the 50's as a gimmick and now there is a question over how authentic it actually is. I.E is it the real deal or one of the 50's gimmicks.
Actually come to thinkof it i remember you could buy a similar thing from the buried village in Rotorua as well, I remember having something similar when i was a kid

falcon-hell, Feb 9, 5:40am
its met its reserve now.

redslapper, Feb 9, 5:47am
who has that sort of money to buy "sand", i can think of better things to buy with that sort of money

kaituna, Feb 9, 6:58am
The terraces were not even made from sand. It was a limestone flow stone colored by geothermal metals and chemicals.

jsbike, Feb 9, 7:20am
Do you have a any idea how much stuff is donated to museums and then just gets put in a vault or storeroom and never sees the light of day!

321mat, Feb 9, 11:46am
Yeah, one wonders why some of their taniwha have not haka'ed on down and claimed it as part of their ta'onga.
Maybe they just want some, part, of all of the proceeds from the sale, to ease their oppression, felt by them since the white man came to this country and brought such awful things as the Ford Zephyr, Telstar, the Dole, DPB, the TAB, and Waikato Draught.

bigracket, Feb 9, 12:22pm
HA ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

sue344, Feb 9, 12:33pm
i heard the other day that someone has recently found the p&w terraces with some type of sonar scanner, wonder if they will be dug up

andrea_w, Feb 9, 1:43pm
I think you missed my point.

moosie_21, Feb 9, 2:09pm
Haha, yes I do, because I work in one. 95% of our collections will never be seen. I consider myself lucky, having access to all that stuff!

moosie_21, Feb 9, 2:12pm
Even if it does go through with an overseas buyer (can't see any Kiwi paying that much money.), there's very little chance it will be exported since the Protected Objects Act 1975 will most likely prevent its export, being of such great heritage to the country. Can also see some Iwi getting involved in this.

cuda.340, Feb 9, 5:47pm
notice how the reserve was 1 cent more than the highest bid! can you say suspicious!

jsbike, Feb 9, 6:02pm
you are one of the lucky few

moosie_21, Feb 9, 6:02pm
lol, think of what this guy will have to try and get through then! I reckon it's fake anyways.

moosie_21, Feb 9, 6:04pm
That I am. Well, 5 years of Uni and some good marks helped too lol. If you ever stop by Wanganui I can show you around. We don't have any motor vehicles, but I do specialise in the weapons department!

im_andrew, Mar 30, 7:40am
"You listed too late,They have just found these terraces in the lake that swallowed them, when they start to bring samples up and sell them as capitalism dictates, yours will be just another piece of history in a sea of lost history. We are bidding just to mess with you::When that yellow flag comes we are gonna drop our sacks cause we ain't got that money, and never will,I just never had the chance to bid this high (Liar:was a Spitfire I had a crack at) Be Cool flojo40 (404 )7:31 pm, Tue 8 Feb "

Thats why, trademe (or the seller) pulled the auction
