Compared with the wrx of the same error they seem to have less get up "n" go. They as a hole are a good car but i would think it would be hard to get one that hasnt had a hiding. Tranfer boxes and gearboxs are known to break under stress. but then again you pretty much looking at the same issues that you would encounter with a wrx. or any other car for that matter. Most issues evos have can be traced back to the way they have been treated.

rear AYC diffs can get noisey and/or clunky with operation, often fixed by replacing with a later Evo 5/6 diff. Gearbox and transfer cases seem reasonably strong, when they switched the engines from one side of the bay to the other they did away with the unnecessary counter rotating shaft in the gearbox from the previous Evos which lead to more space for bigger/stronger internals etc.

The Evo 4 is considered the least desirable in the pack, but it's good cause it makes them cheaper than an evo3, which in my opinion is even more ugly and out-dated. It doesn't take much to bring the Evo 4 up to Evo 5+ spec.

i agree they are like the r33s in my opinion cool but the odd 1 out but it would do away with all the crap u get with evo 1 2 3 just gota find one in good nick.

Evo 4's are all good. Way better than a 96-97 STI.

As long as they're not launched and clutched kicked all the time, with regular service, they can be all reliable as.

Adding decent diff and gear box oil such as redline and adding mitsy's anti shock treatment anti shock additive will help prevent gear box issues.

A slammed, de-winged 4 on nice JDM rims looks phat as.

Evo4's where made popular due to the intial D series. First championship won by T-MaK was in a 4.
