Just make sure you don't pay too much. Great little cars for the right price but if you are paying up around 10K for a 2001 model reliability becomes pointless because you have already paid twice as much as what the car is really worth in the first place. Thats the shame of it Toyota = Massive premium (for no real return)
Others on here are tired of hearing it but throw it up against one of these 352274331 which are about the best priced car in the segment and see how it compares. If you still think the Toyota is worth twice the price then go for gold.
BTW, the Fiat is also very reliable and has a much better transmission (if considering an auto model) its also more economical but goes just as well.

A Punto isn't even remotely in the same class as a Corolla - its Echo/Vitz sized.

If its too small its too small. No need to get excited! Its just worth making sure that the OP does realise the massive premium those puppys run to. Like I said if they drive a Punto and still think the Toyota is worth twice as much as more than thats great. they have then made an informed decision.
With regard to reliability, my Punto's have been exceptionally reliable and so have my Toyota's. given that the OP could buy an absolutly mint punto with 25K on the clock for 6.5K vs an older much higher km Toyota for the same money you need to take that into consideration as well.
Its also worth noting parts for the Punto are generally cheaper.
If nothing else the Punto is a great yardstick for relative value.

I have a Fielder 1.8S (same as a Runx except its a wagon),it is a totally reliable dependable car which is up to 195000kms now,I got it at 123000kms and apart from the usual oil changes, spark plugs, air filter ,the only thing that i have had to replace/repair are front brake pads and adjust the handbrake and replace 2 lightbulbs in that time. The car still goes very well and is very economical,if you didn`t know its mileage you would have said it has no done less than 100000kms.Try getting a 1800 S (not a Z) over a 1500 Runx/Allex

Andy61, Just curious why not a 1800 Z!

I'd go for the Z but only with the manual transmission - the auto really doesn't suit it

The Z has issues with the engine, causing the engine to self destruct.

What issue is this! There were a spate of people missing shifts in Celicas with that engine in the US (purely driver error) but thats about it.

What are the issues please!

The premium pretty much relates to their well known reliability, speaks for itself beyond all doub't really.

All I took from that Jazz, is that you think Corolla's are "great little cars". finally!

LOL, hey anything is great for the right price. of course in the case of a Cavalier they have to pay you to take it away. but still that's a price!
On a serious note, sure if they were priced the same as a Fiat and I was buying a manual one I would consider the Toyota product.

Yes, it shows how many people actually bother to do their own math. I would happily pay a premium for the slight increase in reliability. but twice the price that's just absurd. Also, sure SOME models of Toyota are very reliable but not all, in fact some of their older people movers and diesels are shockers for reliability.
You also have to consider that a lot of that reliability comes from the lack of features to break down in the first place, use of very old technology automatic gearbox's that hinder fuel economy.
Toyota does not have a magic "Toyota Wand" that no other company can replicate that makes everything not break. Reliability comes at a price as outlined above.
Toyota have just chosen to put everything into getting that extra little bit of reliability which of course comes at the expense of other aspects of the vehicle. Not saying this is a bad thing, just saying keep things in perspective.

* The Vitz still carries a heavy price premium so if you want to compare them to each other be my guest.
* As mentioned the Toyota Diesels have never measured up for reliability, or economy, or performance for that matter, sure the petrols are generally fine though. I will add though that their diesels are slowly on the improve. The key point here though is quite simple. a Toyota badge is not a guaranteed ticket to reliability.
At the end of the day some Toyotas are very reliable. class leading in fact. Some Toyota's are average and some are below average and well behind the leaders in that segment.
Whats important is to realise there is a distinction and not every Toyota is the epitome of reliability.
Unfortunately Toyota has become a bit of a religion in this country so its important to keep things realistic and be aware of what you are actually getting for your money.
Silly thing is, I was a huge Toyota fan and owned several before the Price premiums got out of hand. When prices fall back into line I will likely have them again.
