Up to you, but the way I see it is, sell the POS as is. Buy a newer, more sensible, economical, reliable car. In doing so, you won't be stuck with a potential money pit, you'll have cheaper insurance and simply less hassles and more money. Good luck.

This is the only problem ive had with it since buying it im deffinatly not going to sell it it aint a piece of shit. If you dont drive like a dick head they are very reliable sensible even. I aint a "girl racer"i just appreciate sexy fast cars

depends on whether you can do it yourself, If so then you will only be paying for bearings/gaskets/oil&filte- r etc. If you are going to get someone to do it then to keep the costs down a bit i would pull the engine and reinstall it, saving you a few hours labour. My missus threw a bearing in her car recently, after costing the parts etc it was cheaper and less hassle (for me) to throw a 2nd hand engine in, get a few quotes to do the job and then get some quotes for another engine and go from there. Never a nice thing to happen at this time of year

Thanks thats alot more helpful than the first reply. I think the cheapest i can get a second hand engine is round 3-5k and all i want is a completely standard rb25det engine. Have a mate that could do it for me for free i just need to get parts. What parts would i need exactly!

You wont know until you pull the pants off it, could be a main bearing or rod bearing, for piece of mind you could just do them all, then you will need to see if the offending buggered bearing has damaged the crank (score marks etc etc), if so you may be in for a crank grind or a replacement (dont want to give you the heebie jeebies lol, It may be all good in there, but its always wise to have a look), Bottom end gaskets, seals etc (may as well do them while the engine is out), But honestly you wont know parts you will need until that sump comes off. STA Parts in Auckland are a good place to get stuff like that from.

you should be able to get a replacement engine from a importer for around 2g with a warrentee
snoopy221,
Dec 21, 8:42am
mmakay one fiddy. and it's a **land of the never change oil ** import. possibly wound back to 40,000 from 90+000 when it came in. And the ole six has dropped a big end. Tis either pull it out-check the crank journal for roundness-(When the bearing is worn they can get a bit egg shaped)-pay to see ya local engine reconditioner/machinist.- .and make the !do ya own!-or go secondhand-descision when ya know what the crank is like-and from someone QUALIFIED with the RIGHT measuring tolls and experience to assess the rest of the engine from the results.

Can the bearings on these be done from under the car, or does the engine really need to come out!
R33s are pretty cars. the only Skylines I've ever really looked and thought "I want one of those".
Any so-called "Sensible" car you might replace your Skyline with, will still have big-end bearings, head gaskets, thermostats, wheel bearings of its own. But it won't be a Skyline.

Apparently they can be its just makes quite a bit more mess than if you were to take it out and do it. And i completely agree although im not a big fan of the ass end of the r33 its probably one of the tidiest standard r33s ive seen. I had more problems with my celica than my skyline. There aint nothing better than hearing the sound of a skyline engine

there are some cars from japan that fit your description, but anyone with half a clue can spot them a mile off, most cars from japan at a given mileage - say 90,000kms are in a hell of a lot better overall condition including mechanical than a car that has been in nz since new.the fact is nz'ers maintain their vehicles a lot more poorly than the japanese. by a LONG shot
mk3zephyr,
Dec 21, 6:38pm
Yes there is, A nicely tuned Rolls royce merlin for example will beat the sound of skyline engine hands down, hell doesnt even have to be nicely tuned, but then again whatever blows your skirt up/smokes your tyres

Look at FRSport online and order the bearings and seals from them, they are in the states but it still usually alot cheaper. I would rebuild the engine you have, better the devil you know than inheriting another motors problems, as long as there is no scoring on the crank and whatnot it should be fairly straight foward.

just get a long block seeing you have all the other stuff. i just sold a rb25det neo without the turbo for $900, was a 4wd one so would have needed to convert to rwd to fit yours
oil pick up is not a straight swap, due to the different location for the oil pick up on the 4wd block, if you fit a rwd pickup, the sump will hit it when you put it on

Thanks for all the advice. I think ill just fix my engine. I will go and get new big end and main bearings, head gasket, rings, seals, oil filter, oil pump and some good quality oil is there anything else i should get!

OP, I put "r33 rb25det" into the searchbar at the top of the page, and got 557 hits, including two 'wrecked cars', one of which had about fifteen cars he was wrecking, plus all kinds of motors, accessories and spares.
