Can a taxi driver legally charge extra for paying a fare by EFTPOS!

I can see no reason why not provided he discloses the extra charge prior to the commencement of the fair.

EFTPOS, I'm not sure they can.
I think they can for Credit Cards, but as carmedic said, it should be disclosed.

Happened to me when I was down in Wellington, last night.I didn't see the usually displayed charge card - it may have been shown - but we certainly not warned of the charge until paying.
Tradesmen visiting home with EFTPOS have never levied an additional charge.
Thanks

The food caravans at the motor racing last weekend had a $2 surcharge for Eftpos. Was clearly posted in signage.
I would have thought commonsense prevailed in situations like these and you would carry cash.

How many people carry much cash, these days!Certainly not struck it with Auckland taxis.Just shows the penalty of not catching a regular company's car. Some of the cars now blend with the combined and co-op cars.

Nothing worse than a long queue at an event and people dick around with Eftpos.
I'll take a Murph's pie please. $4 passed over, job done. What is so difficult about that!
Eftpos/Visa is for when you spy a book or a model you want at an event and don't have the pile of cash handy.A $20 note - even in my racesuit - is no big deal and normally well covers the food and drink for the day.
Taxis are a rip off anyway! We went to an afternoon show in Auckland last Saturday. We didn't know the last ferry back was 5:55pm and had left our car at the ferry!
Wife approached a taxi driver for a quote for Birkenhead whilst we were waiting for the bus.His answer!"How much have you got!."
Quoted $30.No thanks.$25!No thanks.
Sat around hoping we'd change our mind, clogging up the traffic for ages.
Bus fare for three of us was $13.50 and a very enjoyable run too!

Quite possibly. However it was clearly stated.
I carry a decent sum of cash with me most of the time. After the EQ here you never know when you may need it. No power = no eftpos = runs on cash machines if they are actually working.

You'd think they would WANT people to pay by EFTPOS.More people paying by EFTPOS the less cash they end up carrying.

Yer but the more cash, the less tax they have to pay.

It's not all badthey are not ripping you off merely covering the costs of having a pos terminal in the car . They are not free and attract on going costs to runThe device etc is leased off a company like taxi chargeit is normally not an individual choicebut the taxi company will require it , As well as applicableEftpos charges there is air time /data charges to the telco provider . Ive had quite a bit to do with taxi companies setting up data dispatch systemsthe owner drivers find it increasingly hard to make a living esp paying huge Levey's to cover the cost of these systems to make the service smarter for the customers .

The taxi drivers will presumably still be paying the rental, whether they use the Eftpos or not.Same applies to Visa terminals. For them you pay a rental charge, plus a 'user/account' charge that amounts to about $20 a month, plus a transaction fee that varies according to many factors but can be up to about 4.2% per transaction.Mobile is extra.
Visa users are now allowed to charge for the processing fee and so now the value of Airpoints/rewards has been totally negated as the surcharge is now often more than the loyalty credit!
