yesterday. Got a 5 series BMW 1998 and have done it a few times now, Have taken it to Plastic Repairs in Wairau Rd. $835 and it will be restored provided it doesn't need any genuine BMW grommets and stuff which cost an arm and a leg.BUT! does anyone know of any warning or indicator advice that stops you from catching the bloody thing! I know a good sense of spatial awareness and more than a modicum of care will help but honestly its not hard to catch the thing. Guy along the road has got same model as us and HE is always catching his too!

just be careful. take driveways/curbs at an angle instead of hitting it head on

Factory springs and tyres!

Your second to last sentence summed it up.
Do what 2lo sez, and if john is right it's your fault.

I don't hit anything whilst underway, its parking that gets me. You know the wheel stops in supermarket car parks and the like. The wheel and tyre combo means that ride height is at factory levels so ground clearance hasn't been compromised. But you're correct in that more than normal care is required, I am just frustrated at the idiot who looks back at me from the mirror

Excellent paparic that is exactly what I am after. I suppose I can get a listing of those things from the after market places like Repco!

If you went with sensors you'd need to drill holes in the bumper and get the sensors painted as well, it might look a little bit naff.

I reverse into pretty much all parks, there's more clearance under the rear bumper on my car, and if I'm driving forwards into something, I just don't pull all the way into the space, unless there isn't something there to hit.

hawat, Feb 13, 9:17am
thanks pandai all good advice and you would think that at my age I would have figured all that out for myself. but na! Got 835 good reasons to sort myself out now. On reflection I probably won't install the proximity alarms at the front, They are fitted at the rear and thats enough. I just have to me more careful. As I said before its the dingus in the mirror that is the problem

pandai, Feb 13, 9:24am
Good on your for fixing it again though, I've got a crack or two just under the front of my front bumper and it hasn't been fixed in case it just happens again.

hawat, Feb 13, 9:31am
ok thats me, reversing into parks henceforth. Too lazy before but this is the cheaper and less stressful option. Wish I had been as careful and circumspect before. Ah well!

How bout a wireless reversing camera mounted in an inconspicuous place on front bumper!

hawat, Feb 13, 11:20pm
OOOOOOOO! I like it. I'm gonna look into that. Hot Feb night and I have to go to work early BUT I CAN'T BLOODY SLEEP!

siren676, Feb 14, 11:19am
Do bumper protectors exist!

lookoutas, Feb 14, 4:26pm
Of course they do.
They're mounted between your ears!

hahahahaha good one lookoutas. Agree entirely. My parents did not tick that particular box on the options list for me. So I need the "after market" add on product. That is why I liked the idea of that wireless camera thing. I don't know if I would actually go to those lengths but having had a quick look at things it is a definite option and worth a look if only for the fun of it. It comes with a small screen that you fit to the dash and costs about$250. Would be interested to see if it could be wired into the tv screen already in the 540 as the navigation system already uses it
