Two thoughts -1) a spike has gone through into the gearbox computed because of the knackered batteries 2) with the batteries out the car has gone back to the default factory settings.

He is semi correct early mitsi invecs (and mpi) learned adaption was stored in volatile memory. Disconnection of the battery for more then 16 seconds will erase learned data, there is however a correct drive procedure required to "relearn" the transmission

TLD-I'm speaking from personal experience -the symptoms do sound like the computer has reset to default. The FIRST thing I've always been told to do is drive the vehicle normally and let the computer relearn your driving style/speed. But has anything else about the vehicle been changed! wheel/tyre upgrade was my thought.bigger wheels changing the point the vehicle kicks into OD

this is diamante relearn but procedure is pretty much standard for most. Set parking brake, start engine in "P" or "N" position. Warm-up vehicle to normal operating temperature or until cooling fan cycles. * Allow vehicle to idle for one minute in "N" position. Select "D" and allow engine to idle for one minute. * Accelerate at normal throttle position (20-50%) until vehicle shifts into top gear. * Cruise at light to medium throttle. * Decelerate to a stop, allowing vehicle to downshift, and use brakes normally. * Process may be repeated as necessary.
