My 96 1kz prado is often needing a bit of cranking to start, like its starved of fuel. Have done all the filters including the one in the tank. What else can cause this! Cheers

Only hard first start of the day is every start!

are you using a additive like winns edt! and is it smoking when it starts ! 2 question answer both.

have you checked the glow plugs! Some diesel engines are quite reliant on them for starting even when warm

I had been running Moreys diesel additive untill recently, i puffs a little bit if i've had to crank it a bit but otherwise no i doesn't smoke. It' had a new set of glow plugs and the injectors rebuilt recently. And its the first start, but then sometimes it fires straight up first time as well. Cheers

those engines have a very distinctive start,,they always need a full revolution and fire on the 3rd or 4th time a piston hits tdc. Turbo diesels rarely fire on the first piston, like non-turbo ones do, because of the lower compression ratio.

I had a surf with the same engine in it and it started a lot faster, I'm cranking this then pausing and starting on the second crank at times. (not that i crank the crap out of it first time). CHeers

Try primming the fuel primer befor you start it each morning and see if that helps. The primers are becoming a problem on those and letting air bleed in to the system over night.

I'd be heading down this track too. Seen as it's just the first start of the day it would point to fuel bleeding back to the tank through a failing check valve in the fuel primer or air being introduced through the diaphragm.

Yea I thort about trying that, hopefully its just sonething like that. If it was leaking air in from the primer would it not still start as there is still fuel in the pump etc! Cheers

Any form of air in the injector pump will slow the starting. Air introduced into the fuel filter over night will push fuel back to the tank via the return line so air in the fuel filter will cause air in the injector pump housing. Not uncommon.

Awesome, just trying to learn as much about it as possible while I'm at it. Cheers

It has been mentioned before in this thread. It will be your glow plugs all it takes is 1 not to be working and will be hard to start.

Re5 glow plugs done. Still worth checking but then the issue would be not just on first start of the day .

Is it turning over fast enough! A low battery will not help!

Yea the glow plugs have been replaced and tested. Yea its got a near new 700cca battery and spins over nicely. Cheers

What sort of fuel pump it got ! It now sounding like a fuel issue.

Just the standard pump, I'm sure it a fueling issue becuase in my experience when a glow plugs out it takes ages or needs a sniff of petrol to start. Cheers

Is the shutoff butterfly operating normally!

I'm thinking an air leak as well, once primed not a problem!
