Good on ya, thats real Bonding material there, I never got to do stuff like that, the only time i get help working on a car is when im fixing his car! :P , otherwise, he practically taught me nothing about cars except how to drive them

ola_bitchola1, Feb 14, 7:11pm
yea im the same as ginga never had that apart from him teaching me to drive and how to do a skid haha

Kaz my son is 23 and does nothing but the garage or workshop with me When he is around.
Love spending time with him and he likes to learn to.

craig04, Feb 14, 7:36pm
Kaz, I've got all this to look forward to. My boy just turned 3 and loves cars. I can't wait!

I think you are on the right track on bringing your son up. So many youths out there have their flash bikes and cars but have no mechanical knowledge of how an engine or gearbox functions, they just keep driving them until a red warning light appears on the dash but by then it's too late, the damage is done. By teaching them at an early stage they will be able to recognise the different sounds a vehicle makes and if there is a strange knock they will know that something is wrong and hopefully turn it off. Well done and encourage him all the way.

my almost 4yr old boy helps out in my garage.he gets me tools and can identify most basic tools now.he can almost change a wheel on the car(apart from cracking the nuts and lifting the wheel on but he trys lol,he even changed the plug on his 4 wheeler.finger tight so when it stops that will be a great time to start on the troubleshooting.at the moment it either works or its f*cked so he tells me,i never had a father round to teach me anything so i enjoy doing it for my boy

Same for me, my boys almost two a couple of nights ago he went to sleep with a 1971 porsche 914 in one hand and a 1968 TR6 in the other :)

My old man was never much for working on cars, so i ended up teaching myself with the help of the local country garage. With any luck He'll be into cars, i've already been thinking about a project car for when he's in his early teens :)

mk3zephyr, Feb 14, 8:10pm
like the others i never had a Dad to show me (died when i had just turned 6), so had to learn everything from scratch. I have a Son now who is just about 2 and loves things with wheels (my older teen stepdaughters love to give him dolls and an old pram, they think its "cute", which really effs me off), anyway he wanders out to the shed with me and loves sitting (or standing) in my saloon car and gives the steering wheel a right hiding, Will be real great when he gets older so i can share things with him that i never got to experiance

Around 10 years ago when he was about 14 my Son Steven said he wanted a Mini, and I thought well there's something we can do together. We found one for about $150, removed the engine & g/box, I have a panel-beater mate so my Son spent one of his school holidays in his workshop sanding it back, ready for the panel work and painting and doing what he could. While it was in the shop we worked on the Engine at home, new rings, bearings, seals etc.He didn't always like how pedantic I was about cleaning but to me there's only one way and that's the right way. When it came back from the shop it looked a million $.We couldn't wait to get the engine back in.The day we got it going we took it in to Wellington for a blat and boy did it turn heads.Bright Yellow with Black roof, it really was something.Sadly I lost my Son in 2007 at just 22 in a motor accident (he was passenger), but those memories of that Mini project and what we achieved together will stay with me forever.Take every opportunity you have.Cars/Bikes or any other hands-on project together is priceless.

Too many posts to read, but #6 is not all true. I never had a dad, he died when I was 2 so my mum raised all us kids. So I never got taught nothing about mechanics. But as soon as I was old enough to drive and own cars I started learning on my own. Changing wheels, wiring stuff up, oil changes, checking fluids, changing fluids, remove parts & reinstalling etc. Have basically trained myself but also with the help of mates who do know and my oldest (and only) brother who knows alot - but 90% I do myself. So not all of your post is entirely true.

trogedon, Feb 15, 7:09am
Agreed. What a sad loss and sad you guys who's dads died when you were young.

mrfxit, Feb 15, 7:14am
Yea get that around here a lot, can't keep their attention on anything outside for long
Never mind anything mechanical

My dad was a Fitter and Turner (well most of the time he just did turning work) so pretty handy and always roped me in to do projects around the house. We build his yacht together, my yacht, another boat (boats were his big thing), concreting, cutting trees (he bought me a chainsaw for Christmas when I was a teen, working on his VW Beetle (which I still have. Of course it never needed much work!), and a few other small car jobs. I remember him trying to arc weld my motorbike frame with the battery still connected! Our boys are only 7 & 5 so not doing much with them (academically yes) but hopefully working on my current projects in the future.

trogedon, Feb 15, 7:16am
If you're into reading, read the book "Why children don't think and what we can do about it" It??

shaun16, Feb 15, 9:14am
my old man taught me all the car basics, like looking after them and fixing minor stuff. i would stand there for ages watching, and then having to go and graba tool or rag etc for him

directorylist, Feb 15, 9:14am
Thats wicked.

saki, Feb 15, 2:42pm
You are all fairly lucky the only thing I had in common with my family was the bash and I was the recipient.

trogedon, Feb 15, 3:05pm
Its a good thing we can change things with our own families

sw20, Feb 15, 8:29pm
I've got a father and son project. I'm the son LOL

My late grandfathers '67 Vespa SS180. Its a runner but needs a bit of panel work and other cosmetic touches. Motor is all good. Might treat it to a new sparkplug if the old girl plays her cards right.
