Sump

Hi there I am doing an engine conversion that requires a change from front to rear sump. My question is by extending the oil pick-up pipe will this effect the oil pressure in any way!

You've answered your own question. Basically.

DING^^
You May need to brace the pickup pipe to prevent flexing & fracturing if it's a lot longer then the original pipe

make sure you weld a tab on the pick-up tube ( at the pick-up end). Either bolt it to a mains stud or weld two tabs on and make them long enough to reach the sides of the block and let the sump bolt hold it in place. I learnt that after my first rear sump conversion. After about a month of driving the weld on the pick-up tube broke. Sudden loss of oil pressure - not good

many thanks guys for confirming my thoughts, much appreciated. I will not be able to use the dipstick, but I am working on the idea of a sightglass

if you can find enough meat in the rear of the block you can drill a new dipstick hole. you may be able to use the original dipstick in the original hole just shorten the stick, you may only get a reading when fill tho. another option is fit the dipstick into the sump at the rear. if there is a will there is a way.

A new dipstick tube can be welded to the side of the sump & braced to the manifold or block.

Example :If the engine needs 4 litres of oil to the full mark .
From empty to 3 litres is the "low" mark / 1 litre more up to the "full" mark
DON'T allow for oil filter, thats got nothing to do with whats sitting in the sump on a working engine/ turned off
Just make sure the sump is dry before putting in 3 litres of oil to set the dipstick height for the low mark

Once again guys many, many thanks for the advice. Goes to show, how much help is availabe on here (had not thought of the pipie off sump idea). BRILLIANT! .All problems solved.

Well it's like this .
If you can squeeze a .

350 chev in to a Vw beatle
253 holden in to a Bambina
Eip 6cyl in to a morrie oxford
350 chev in to a Hillman Hunter
Lexus v8 in to a toyota Surf

Then your job is easy peasy

I will back up what others have said about bracing the new pick-up tube. They DO snap off and you are left with no oil pressure and an engine re-build.

Escort motors into a Cortinas require this change and they have no pressure problems (if the tube doesn't snap)
