So, im finally doing my cars Service, I jack it up to let the oil drain and.the square end drain plug is almost completely rounded, and i dont have any welding gear.and i cant get enough clamping force on the drain plug to release it ( doesnt help that it looks like some one used thread tape on it ) and the only socket that i had to bash onto it, split, so. im stuck. and i cant drive the car yet either -_-

Mole grips !

ginga4lyfe, Feb 17, 12:39pm
im all good now, I found another old pair of vice grips, other than my broken ones, and they worked a treat, I gotta say, when everything else failed i wasnt too happy, now i just gotta go around and find a new plug to replace the old one, though im still not happy that the previous owner put in a crap plug instead of replacing it.

Count yourself lucky, thats a easier fix. Try rounded off brake bleeders like on a car of my friends I was working on. Has they say if it involves women and tyres you have issues!

I did the oil/filter on our Mitsi this morning (its been over a year??

I replaced the plug with a nice new brass plug, it has a hex head instead of that piddly square thing, and it works mint!, and nope. i didnt find it at any auto store. coz the ones in manukau ( sept one ) suck, I instead had to goto a engineering supplies shop were they had one to fit my exact needs :)

Any more problems, like finding another sump plug, contact Auckland Triumph Car Club

I hope you put double fibre washers on it, brass has such a huge thermal expansion / contraction rate a single thin fibre will work loose in no time at all, even an 'O' ring will work itself loose on a brass plug into a steel base
- check it regularly

Not sure but I think the first vice grips as you call them, were branded Mole Grips and just like Hoover or Biro, the name stuck. Mine certainly are Mole Grips, not a cheap Taiwanese copy.

Anyone else still usemonkey wrench type grips, that grip harder the more pressure you apply!

After lots of bad language

carmedic, Feb 17, 9:00pm
Vice Grip is a trade name of Irwin tools
Mole Grip is a trade name of Stanley

ginga4lyfe, Feb 17, 9:17pm
sooo. what do we call anything else that does the same thing, but not made by stanley or irwin!

The name'Mole Grips' comes from the original British maufacturer, M K Mole and son,

Hey GingaJust wondering why ya diddn't just grind the flats back into the old sump plug or tack weld an old socket onto it.

johnf_456, Feb 18, 7:33am
Guess you didn't see the no welding gear.

ginga4lyfe, Feb 18, 8:57am
yeah, no welding gear, but i do have angle grinders, and Kaz, I did think of that, but, the square lug was already less than 10 mm and i didnt wunna ruin any chance i had and gripping on the end , if i had ground it down even just a touch, it could have made the square easyer to break off, and. although my angle grinder is only 100mm type, i couldnt safely fit it between the chassis and the sump , But anyways I HAVE A NEW PROBLEM, Finding good second hand Seatbelts!

ginga4lyfe, Feb 18, 9:14am
YUUP. its a PITA for sure!, I can get a mobile guy to come do it, but im not liking the 140+gst per belt and he isnt replacing the buckles, just the straps

ginga4lyfe, May 2, 7:43pm
ok, and now. Im have trouble finding new drum cylinders, one side was shot so id rather replace both sides, only problem is, only BNT can get them in and they arnt even sure its the right ones! lol, at leased the bulbs were an easy fix!
