That story reminds me of a panelbeater I worked with, bought in a door skin for an XA RF door and after cutting and welding it realised they had sent an XB skin. Whoops. time to cut the door handle section out and swap the one out of the old skin.

i worked with ken 4 a couple of years, it was a great education for a young chap like me back then. we did the heatway rally with the x paul adams car. raced a supermodified a western springs. built and raced a fiat 125t etc. then ken got keen on drags again. we thrashed every thing we could ( at meremere drag strip ) get our hands on ! once, we borrowed george bunce's 202 xu 1and managed a 14.6 +/-only to have a 250cc montessa go thu the traps a full second quicker than the xu1. then ken got really keen, we built and raced the first decent looking american style rear eng rail. he ended up putting a stunt show to gether and we toured a lot of the nth is, it went down hill from there . was it garth hogan that was with ken in the speed shop ! i know garth had one in barries point road takapuna.

Its been a while but Garth owned or was involved in Greenlane speed shop on the Great South rd along with the pukekohe hot rod club. The Shop that Ken and Ken had was on the Great North rd and was called Speed city . The old Kopuku drag strip was way way down the road that runs in land beside the old Meremere power station you turned left offthe great South rdand seamed to drive for miles down the road beside the buckets that carried the coal from the open cast mine to the power station.

that very same mustang was at the Trentham swap meet this year, still the same paint job on it , it was built in the states from a muzzy that was rear-ended and a shelby rear was put on it .from memory that is. Still running the 428 or 9 with a 4 speed too.

Yep, had a Zephyr motor in it. Was it that car that disintegrated the clutch pressure plate and sent one of the weights through the top of the dashboard!

I grew up in Kopuku , the track surface was the overburden from removing the coal and was a grey clay called fire clay once graded and dried it was like concrete.
How ever. once slightly wet it was like ice to drive on.Bob Rossiter was responsible for getting hold of the venue with the help of my father Matt Ralph the mine manager.I was 12 at the time and never missed a meet. Caused me to have a life time love of American muscle cars and I,have owned many in the 37 years here in Australia.were I live. I still have very good memories of the cars and drivers.
