get one that does gas/gasless then you have the chance to use gas or not

Well Ive just been through this problem and finally took the plunge and got a good one instead of worring about all the unkown ones about. Plus all the contradictory answers i got from questions i asked around the shops.
Whats your price range! thats the starting piont. You will get what you pay for. and dont believe all the specs they have to be entirly true.
As for gasless, some say yes some say no. I ended up buying a new cebora 155 and c02 set up. Think of it as a once in a life time thing and dont buy a $200 crappy one.

was hoping to spend around the $600 mark, what did your cebora 155 and co2 set up set you back!alot of info i just been looking at comment on how dirty the weld is with gasless whether this is poor machine setting or the way they are.

I looked at cheaper machines as well but in the end went with what i knew and well established brand. I used ceboras for 10 years in the trade and had no real issues with them. My one cost $1290 with auto dark helmet and c02 reg. Secound hand ones turn up on here but sell pretty quick.

get one that can do both i used to have some crap named telwin or something welder. that was a pile of crap. I now use my mates partner gas and gasless. but i never use gasless as i got me a big argon bottle. but the other day i forgot to turn on the gas and welded without gas and only noticed after i finished i noticed something was slight different when i welded but not that it would not weld right. it just sparks more and the welds tend to collaps in the middle without gas.
A cheap gas alternative is Co2 any fireextinguisher place will sell and fill you a bottle converted for mig welding. fills are 25$ for co2 abouts

Oh yea and the c02 set up was $300 but I now own the bottle and it was full. 5kg one.

panther 132 mig welder is what i use and its top welds as good as a big expensive machine. you just dont want to labour it for 8h a day and it also takes small rolls wire (supersheep auto is the cheapest place to get mig wire in small rolls paid 20$ for last roll normally 25$ and other places ask over 50$ for the same thing. mitre10 i think sells it not to expensive either.

I still really like my setup but it was $1000 and as much as I wanted to pay less I am VERY glad I spent the coin.

* Secondhand DECA 180 Mig
* New old stock Binzel Torch
* Argoshield owner bottle with 10 year cert. The Huge size was the same price to buy as the smaller one and it lasts literally for years (for my use)and costs the same as the half size bottle to fill as the gas is cheaper at that volume.

If you are doing car panel repairs then you want everything you can to help you. that means a good low setting. Some cheap welders do not actually go low enough, mine starts at about 40AMPS from memory and thats what I use for panels. Set it up for nice thin wire .6 or .8, use decent gas and its a whole lot easier.

Got a 15kg roll the other day from Blackwoods Paykels for $36.80 (Bulk Buy)
The previous couple were over $50 each (same)

Ive got a Maximig & couldnt be happier, tried many brands having worked many different workshops & for a single phase Im amazed how well it does from light gauge panel to 'lift the Queen Mary'. I often take mine in to work if I have plenty of welding to do as it doesnt spatter half as much as many 3 ph units out there & blows all other single phases Ive tried

cheers will look further into the mentioned migs, thanks for the responses

get about 150amp and run .6 wire with argosheild or co2.smaller amp welders are useless.

I've got a Ryobi 135Amp with gas bottle, had it for about 6 years now and use it a hell of a lot. never had any problems. can weld 6mm plate easy but struggles with 10mm. And BOC have you by the balls with a rental of the gas bottle, would like to buy my own but there pricey
