i am car shopping at the mo, I am looking at either a 2003 holden commodore HSV with 90 k on the clock, or a 04 subaru Outback 2.5L with 70 k on the clock. Both have different features we like but can't decide on which one, thoughts please on both aside from the obvious, one being a v8 and one being a four cylinder, and no im not buying a ford so don't ask

Buy at end of the month. They the sales rep have monthly quotas to fill and if they down they will bend over backwards to make a sale. Buy the HOLDEN

Drive them both and buy the one you prefer.
If you have sprogs, practice getting kids/carseats in and out. Outback (wagon) would be more useful from that point of view.

^^^ This ^^^if you have to buy one or the other, or keep looking for a better deal.

Two very different cars.
You need to decide what your priorities are.

Holden will retain its value much better since its V8. You will cover the cost of fuel with the lack of depreciation. Subaru's are nearly as bad as european cars for depreciation.

does the subaru have a timing belt or chain for when it hits 100km
mybaby,
Jan 3, 5:16am
the v8 will use bugger-all more fuel than an awd subaru, so you may as well have the v8.

Well, there's your answer.
chooken1,

Do you mean, should you change the cam belt after 100,000km
thunderbolt,

Buy the Subbie.
Set aside approx $700 to replace the timing belt, tensioners and waterpump.
redslapper,
Jan 3, 5:48am
no i mean is it a belt or a chain :) so if its a belt il have it changed
neo_psy,
Jan 3, 5:51am
2004 should have had it changed anyway. I think it's 6 years/100,000km
redslapper,

um i just re looked at the photos and nethier has a tow ball so how much would it cost to put one on :)

Holden much lower rated for pinching Subaru pretty much at the top of the list since they came over here.
V8 a little thirsty Boxer not far behind
Holden a little slower but solid Subaru faster but breaks easily when pushed often
V8 sounds pretty good & smooth Subaru sounds like a v8 running on 5 cylinders (if it's lucky)
Holden cheaper then the Subaru for insurance

we had a vt clubsport and sold it and brought a subaru grandwagon, subaru uses just as much fuel the clubsport but the subaru drives alot nicer, always had holdens and will get another one day but i have found subarus to good wagons, now have three of them,i did cambelt myself, cost me about $150 but would cost like a $1000 for a garage to do it,but i'd rather see the clubsport in the drive than the subie

We are talking v8 HSV vs a 2.5 outback here. This is what you meant.
Subaru a a lot slower. Cambelt! Headgaskets! Holden faster. Expect some minor issues. Subaru cheaper then the Holden for insurance

LOL! Can't argue with that.
vtecintegra,

The Subaru should be significantly better on fuel unless you are doing 100% open road.
Neither is exactly economical around town but the Holden is a hell of a lot worse.
gmphil,

Holden will tow better longer faster for the same buck and when ya done better resale
edangus,

What would I do! What your missus has told you to do. Seeing she is set on it.
You know the Suby is gonna break down and there will be hell to pay (I never wanted that one anyway. you shoulda bought the Holden).
If she likes the Holden, chances are she wont moan about servicing or performance upgrades, good tyres etc etc etc.
Sexist. but relatively true

Buy a Ford

Outback is a much better car. (Which is why it's more expensive to fix.) (safer and more reliable) Holden is still old technology!

Ya reckon!
