When you get the note in the mail from NZTA stating the LICENSE is up for renewal again, put it back on hold.Otherwise you will have to get a new WOF and then reLICENSE it.If you were to put it back on hold for another 12 months, after three months have passed you can take it off again no problem after you've got a WOF, you can't do it within the three month period without having to pay three months worth of LICENSE.

so say i could put it on hold for 2 years! in that time restore it, then go in and get a wof and rego with the same plates!, and im not paying the big bill of having to get it all checked out an new plates etc!

No, if the plates are still live/registration is active, you just put it on hold every 12 months, that is the maximum time you can exempt it at once, if needed after the first 12 months you do the same again. When its roadworthy again you simply go and get a new WOF and manually relicense. It's only necessary to go through compliance and registration if the registration has been cancelled by NZTA, or by the vehicle owner/insurer if its been written off or otherwise put off the road, or its a fresh import etc.

yep thats right. As I said earlier if you try to relicense it again within three months of when you exempted it for 12 months, the sods will charge you back fees for that period.

you can put the license on hold year after year forever

Not correct in this case. Because the car has been on hold for 12 months already, it will not back date. For the purposes of backdating, consecutive exemptions are treated as a single exemption (i.e. 3 months is already up).
This is all assuming that it IS on exemption. Some people seem to think that because they didn't license it's on exemption.

No such thing as the registration register anymore, that got rid of it about 10 years ago, the only thing you've got now is the normal 12 month exemption, and 40 year old cars take 2 years to lapse rather than the standard 1 year.
