Cutting the wood is a function of the chain saw tooth etc.
Stihl saw chain is made in Switzerlandand what is available to the NZ user is ok. Husqvarna has the Oregon bar and chain (US/ Canada etc)as standard. Modern3/8Tooth designs in the Oregon chain available to the Husqy user are not available to the Stihl user in NZ (.56 vs .63) Therefore you shouldcheck whether you like the Oregon chain options on the Husqy or the Stihl chain optionson the Stihl. Oleomac is .56 so can have the Modern Oregon teeth. Carlton chain is also fairly useful as well as a comparison.
I went Stihl saw/ Stihl chain because I cut dirty wood and wire etc and the 3/8 semi-chisel stihl chain is less $ to replace. If I was cutting clean wood I would have a Husqy Autotune Saw with 'rx'!professional fancy oregon chain.

The width of the drive link doesn't change the way saw chain cuts, there is actually .050, .058 and .063 size drive links. And then there is also .404 and .50 chain gauge as well as 3/8 and low pro as well. I try and run Stihl chain on my huskys, to me it's slightly better chain at holding it's edge than the Oregon chain. We used to have all the sizes in the shop i worked in, so you could have 3 different rolls for one saw gauge with the different drive link sizes.

I used to have a zenoa chainsaw [Wrightsons used to have them many years ago]. had beautiful balance for cutting or just holding, but was getting difficult to get parts for. I found when I started using the stihl - it's head was chunky & more tiring to use. a person said that they were Jap brand & make everything [then] from chainsaws to tractors.

The stihl chain is cryogenically treated in the factory these days and that is why it will hold its edge if cutting wood and not rocks or wire. The carlton chain (www.carltonproducts.com ) was the equal of the stihl chain and better than the Husqy stamped Oregon chainI have tried. Oregon probably puts moreeffort into the harvester chain now. http://www.oregonchain.com/Harvester/harvester_home.htm which along with the disc saws chop a lot of North American wood now. http://www.quadco.com/felling-heads/ which make hand held chainsaw look pathetic.
