sounds like you need 12v and a coil suited to electronic ignition.

GREAT SUCCESS!
Put a voltmeter on coil when running and was only 10V, and a quick test by bridging from +'ve side of battery instantly improved idle, Obviously the fat pink wire feeding the coil was a resistance wire (only measured 1 ohm, may have increased resistance as temp rose though). Have never seen that before, used to porcelain type resistor that was more obvious. Was connected via a bullet connector so simple replacement by piece of wire instantly solved problem. Now operates much better through the rev range, and accidentally did massive peelout from end of my street.
Big thanks to all who suggested any options, pointed me in direction of the coil after I was focused on the carb (damn tunnel vision). Much appreciated folks, look fwd to cruising, cheers.

You better recheck the carb for tune now, good result.

Already done, could do it with my eyes closed now, one positive I suppose.

what car! all my falcons have the ballast wire, start at 12 volts for starting, then the resistor kicks in as the wire warms up. bought a fairlane with a ballast resistor wired up to it once, couldnt work out why it would stall at night when I hit the brakes, between the ceramic resistor and the resistor wire the voltage was dropping so low that if any electronics were used I had no spark haha.

XY 'mont. Just wasn't familiar with the wire concept. Prob in the manual but what proper bloke reads them.!

yep, most falcs had them originally (my two XA's did). Good news that it is all sorted - must be a relief !

anything xc and earlier had the resistor wire, which sucks as its not cheap to get an aftermarket distributor to fit the early sixes.
