Yes if it would actually be used in high crash areas. Most of our current speed camera locations aren't in high crash areas, its in areas guaranteed to generate large revenue ie cars going over the limit eg 62km/h when coming downhill etc. Chances are, it will never be used in high crash areas in NZ, just high revenue generating areas.

Yes for sure. I know the cameras are already installed in an area or two, just a matter of time before they'll be utilized.

It gunna happen here.
pup2,

they will be used here and they will go on the passing lanes or the 1st straight after a long winding rd where cars get stuck behind trucks, camper vans etc

yep seen that with the police over the weekend with the gun in the middle of the passing lane. so if people cant pass on the passing lane then they will pass with more risk at other times.

Well, I'll be damned. Clive Mathew-Wilson finally got something right! "P2P cameras are unlikely to make much difference to the road toll because the vast majority of fatalities occur at speeds below the legal limit," he said.

But the government wants more money for another pay rise, so the police will just have to do it i'm picking

all depends on the distance between the camerasoverseas they are mostly along motorways etcthe distances between them can be a fare number of km
they would not put them on passing lanes and slow areas, pointless wast of time .
They are designed to print cash probably end up seeing one just out of Huntly and the other at Pokeno -they would probably do quite nicely there in terms of revenue -good thing you can't cheat them

I have better things to do with my money than give it to the government. They get plenty from my taxes i pay. Why are some of you lot so keen to give them more! Braindead obviously.
signmc1,

I'm not keen to give them anything above my taxes. Don't speed so it'll stay that way.

A bit of mud on my number plate will cheat them.

REMEMBER :
100 Million a year for the government is the MAIN GOAL of speed enforcement

Jan 8, 10:36pm
If that is the case, why did they return 400 unreplaced lasers last year thus depriving cops of the "goose that lays golden eggs" money spinner! Surely if they were only out to make money they would have purchased 400 more wouldn't they!
tonyrockyhorror,

Simple rationalisation. They know there are only so many passing lanes and other perfectly safe sections of road in which to target speeding revenue. Clearly they held a false belief that people speed more than they actually do.
doggitt,
Jan 8, 10:44pm
Well don't speed and don't pay fines. Beat them at their own game!
nzoomed,

it could be better than a speed camera actually, as if you were overtaking a car briefly over the limit, you probably wont get caught, unless you were travelling over the speed limit most of the journey, your km per hour would still probably average out at less, as you would have been held back by cars going slow. Good way to target the real speeders who stay at a constant 110km+ per hour, constantly pulling out and overtaking every car doing the limit. Those are the drivers who are acting dangerous.
wrong2,

so overtaking has suddenly become a crime now eh

+1 Good point.

no i was not getting at overtakers, i was talking about speeders Infact, i think its wrong for them to place speed cameras at the end of passing lanes, as many know its near impossible to not pass a car at 90km without going over the limit.

Exactly. How many threads have we had about the need for a safe, quick burst of acceleration, to pass an 80kmh dawdler so that we can drop back to 110kph! They had the first trials in the UK years ago on our city ringroad, where the speed limit was normally 40mph.They are still there and traffic moves well enough as they are very visible. On some motorways they even post warning notices when they are out of action and traffic doesn't speed up.In NZ, of course they will be for revenue gathering.
