if you're not doing it yourself, its probably cheaper to replace the engine, but then if you're not doing that yourself, then you're probably better off to sell the car to someone who does have the intention of doing it themselves

I f you are going to pull the one and do rings, you may as well ring and bearing the lot chap. Do it once and do it right.

Doing "the lot" is for ppl that don't knnow what they are doing.

You can't buy a piston ring - (singular) Think you are shagged.

Quite true, but if you want the engine to serve you well. Just do the"lot" psml

if you got a broken ring or worn engine it will be 4500$ for a full rebuild engine cheaper to get a other engine secoundhand. ps what makes you think you need a piston orrings! smoking is usually cosed by valvstem seal leaking. if rings are gone then oil gets blowen out the crank breather in large quantity.

Done plenty of "home rebuilds" that have served their owners well. Just need to know what you are doing. Had been known to regap s/h piston rings to suit a perticuler bore size along with s/h bearing shells & didn't have any problems there either.
*awaits the flames from the "pro experts" * ;-)

Cool, yea it's a dying art for sure, to many bliminpicky electronics in modern cars these days, You practicly need an electronics & computer programmersdegree's along with a plumbers degree to work on a lot of the latest cars.
old school mechanics are a dying breed, it's all computer diagnose & swap out parts now. no more fixing stuff.

It's what I love about my 88 Hilux Surf . it's just so damn easily fixable.

There is . The rotton wound underneath

Reading between the lines I'd say its a Caldina GT turbo that had the boost wound up.

save all the trouble of pulling the engine to bits and finding out it's probably naffed anyway it's cheaper to just replace the whole engine with a 2nd hand good runner. What has happened, break a cam belt did it, and if it's a 3SGTE version that has happened on then forget fixing it definitely replace with 2nd hand unit as mentioned above.Good Luck

They are too! but for some reason they liek to blow there bigends on more boost, and also apparently wall wash is an issue if you run an after market BOV!

I bought a "hot " minisupposedly hi comp pistons but after a month & many attempts to get it running right ,took head off-2 std pistons & 2 hi comp pistons .Back to dealeroutcome was he marched me out of the yard.
