My van has a blown head gasket, of course it is gonna cost loads to repair but I looked online and saw that there are these additives that you van use to repair the gasket. Has anyone tried these! Did it work!

i dont think so!but would like to have a look at this additive can you post the website thanks

well depends on why your van blowen the headgasket! if a hose has burst then a sealer is not going ti fix the blowen hose that caused the overheating is is!. You need to know first why it blew the gasket.

OP---an additive like irontite etc is a plaster over a serious cut type repair--it may stretch the life but its NOT a repair

alan1111, Jan 10, 4:23am
Irontite the best but you have to follow instructions. Takes about 24 hours to do it properly.
And its only a temporary fix

Rislone block seal "permanent Head gasket Fix."
It is the only additive that is compatible with coolant, so you don't need to drain the system.
It is not cheap ($75.00 at Supercheap auto) but it works.

gammelvind, Jan 10, 6:36am
The fix really is a new gasket, anything else is only temporary.

Ive used a product called CARGO (Seal well) a couple times. and its only $15 a bottle and is ok to use with coolant after it has cured, really good stuff.

"Mechanic in a tin". Would you put a sealer on a broken condom and expect it to be as good as new!

shane.64, Jan 10, 9:51am
Why notif that condom cost about $1500 to fix .I would try a additive nothing to lose.It happen to me cost $1500 Head Gasket timing belt water pump.and it was never the same

Iron tite worked great for me!

kazbanz, Jan 10, 7:45pm
Condom cost -say $1500 to fix PROPPERLY. Cost of condom failure $150000I think personally I'd pay the $1500 thank you

shane.64, Jan 10, 8:18pm
But you must know that you can't get a motor pregnant .You could try !
I think my wife has a blown head gasket. Would love to find a good sealant that works

kazbanz, Jan 10, 9:14pm
or in automotive terms. option one-temp fixengine ends up knackeredcosting $3-5k to fix . Replace blown head gasket at $1500

curlcrown, Jan 10, 9:23pm
Additives are great for older cars of little value. Sure thay wont last for ever but neither will an old car and they can keep it going for some time. Of course when it start to leak again the prosses can be repaeted. It amazing how well they work.

k.l.wat, Jan 11, 5:46am
The van is a Toyota estima 1996 which I now know that blown gaskets are a common problem. The mechanics has quoted $220 to replace the gasket and possible another $900 if the head is cracked. Does that sound right!

mugenb20b, Jan 11, 5:50am
$220 to replace a head gasket on a Toyota Estima! LOL! Go for it mate, it's a good deal! The head gasket set alone is more than $220. When I did a cylinder head replacement on my old Estima, it cost me well over $1500 in parts, at cost.

intrade, Jan 11, 5:53am
no that sounds wrong a estima from 96 has its engine under the floor its a estima enema pronounced correctly replacing the head gasket is more like 1200$ and the head will be cracked with absolut guarantee. Now these do crack the head just for fun also there could be something wrong that caused it co crack or it could have blowen up because thats what they do after they go past 200,000km it is a ticking time bomb. replacing head and gasket and all is more like 2000 to 3500$ onwards.

carmedic, Jan 11, 5:55am
That STILL sounds cheap!

intrade, Jan 11, 5:56am
so we would need to know a few more facts befor we recommend you buy and use a sealer on the pile of crap or if you should scrap it without even wasting another $ on it.
First is it diesel or petrol! secoundly did you have correct cooling fluids in the cars cooling system or just water!

mugenb20b, Jan 11, 6:03am
I say scrap the POS. Even I should've known better, thinking I "scored" a cheap people mover. Yeah right.

intrade, Jan 11, 6:13am
lol i fixed some i know what it takes and i have tryed to prevent the other heap from blowing up from the same client. His mechanical insurance paid out 4500$ after it had blowen up as he said he would not want to fix it no more. The cooling system is the worst head*uk i ever came across on a car with the filling point lower then the internal heater plus 30 meter of cooling hose spagheti where it could leak at every joint and thats is not all the problems these heaps have. clonking front shocks rear differential that crap em selfs poor crash savety plus leaking diesel pumps on diesel thanks to ulsd-diesel these days could add another 3 grand of repairs ah and yea the turbo-charger that blows out on these dont forget that another 2 grand gone for a new charger on top

intrade, Jan 11, 6:18am
on the other hand There was a enema v6 petrol from a tourist at my local wof place with suspected cracked head . They poured some of that crap in the cooling system it ran worse and worse untill it boiled and stalled. Told the guy its a goner so the tourist sold it for 250$ They asked me if i wanted it lol i said keep dreaming i would not want that crap for free. turned out a worker purchased it and the next day it ran fine again he drove it for a few weeks dont know how long but the goop would have sealed in to the wide crackes when it overheated again and sealed it once it cooled thus themporarely fixing it for the near future.

mugenb20b, Sep 5, 10:49am
Yep, I sold my one ASAP to a shearing contractor, but now I'm stuck having to work on it as it comes to our garage for wofs and services (*facepalm*). Still going great guns, as, of course, I already changed just about every part on it.
