Modify your vehicle to look like a cop car! And specifically NZ police cars. Two facts I have heard already is that you can have the lights on the roof as long as they do not work(no bulbs and wiring etc). The second is that you cannot have the word Police on the vehicle, as it conflicts with a law where you are impersinating a police officer and can be charged. Im thinking of getting an older holden commy and getting the full stickering done (changing the word Police to something else that looks similar, Polite maybe!), and sticking a light rack on top.
Ive seen a lot of drag/drift race cars done up like the old US police cars, but they werent road legal in the first place.

So you feel the need for attention in other areas besides your small.sinep!

yeh and when the police are constantly pulling you over and checking everything out you will have the perfect excuse to come on here and moan about police harrassment which in no way shape or form is your own fault

I just have to ask.Why would you want to do that!

Ive always wanted a commy, and dont want it to look like the a run of the mill sv6 company car. I want to do something unique to a car for fun and it wouldnt cost much at all, and no one else has done this, which is why I really want to know the law on this in NZ.

Not really, I wouldnt care if i got pulled over in this and it was legal. Which is why im asking about it. Because im expecting it. As ive said it will be rarely driven, just for fun. I would probably be pulled over more in a 94 subaru lowered on rims while wearing a hoodie. In fact I would probably be pulled over less in a fake cop car than my project car that I will sell if I decide to get into the VE series. A car that won auto salon twice gets a lot of police attention.
Hopefully now all the questions of why or concequences if its legal are gone. so I can find out the law on this.

It sure is, just like I said in my first post. Which is why its illegal to have POLICE on your car, because you are declaring you are police. But as I said if I leave that off, all it is, is a holden with blue and yellow stickering and a light rack -Not declaring you are a police officer at all. The stickering wont be an exact copy but who would recognise the difference.

You can buy and ride x police bikes as long as they are not used for the intention of impersonating an officer. So I dont think it is illeagal as such to own something that looks the same. I think you are not allowed the word POLICE or any badges that are the same as current ones being used. And I dont think you cant use light bars the same either. As you said they would have to non opperational. People have done this with the old black and whites many times but I know you cant/couldnt do excate replications of them. I also think you could dress up as a cop, or close to it as long as you didnt in anyway try to impersonate one, after all people do it for fancy dress and so on. Biker69 would prob know for sure about this.

Well you could do that but that would then be breaking the law. And where would you get the keys, scanner and so on lol.

Get the word "PIGS" on the side of the car.

There is a commy done to look like a police car up my way. Has COPS on the side. Looks quite effective.

theres a VR commie round here which is a security car "prowler" and its marked up like a cop car of the 90's before they went to the dayglow checkers.

I probably will but I want to know the law behind it. So when it unfortunatly gets cop attention, I will know the exact law on it, as even the cop probably wouldnt know, and depending on how he feels about it could try fine or even impound the car for cop impersonation or whip out something like that.
Ive had a cop try sticker an old van of mine for having solid tints in the rear windshield, he said it was only legal for vans registered to a company, not private use. Luckily I knew more than him about it because i researched before i did it, and we argued to the point where to shut me up he called another cop to verify - where he found out he got it wrong. If I didnt know that law inside out, I would have gotten it stickered, then eventually find out he was wrong, then have to do the drama of getting it removed and wasting my time.
So i purely want to know the law on it for this reason.

good on you for wanting to do something different. reminds me of when I had to pull over for a mufty car that was tailgating me with its siren going to town. As I pulled over, the car passed with a car load of Maori's in it, laughing their head's off at me . lol I couldn't help but laugh too when I clicked they weren't cops.

Haha good stuff, In fact doing something like this gave me the idea. Back when I was younger a friend took daddys holden VZ out to town. Earlier in the day we went to the $2 shop and got these cheap little toys that had flashing red and blue LED's. At night we went around turning them on and making people move out of the way, wemade one guy pull over and we stopped behind him and we just sat there for about 5 minutes with the headlights on until he eventually got out then we sped off. And now years on, I want to do this. guess I havent grown up a lot.

lol, thats halarious. I like your style.

All you need is a stock sv6. People always think they are unmarked cop cars.

Yeah a guy i was talking to who was parked up on quay street. on a friday night. where car enthusiests meet. he had a standard sv6 vz, had those cop wheels that look like spare wheels, and had dummied up the lights you can see in the front and rear windshield. And he had them all wired up and working with a switch under his dash. Looked exactly like a D car apart from the 20yo bogan driver.

Was one out our way- I know the car, and owner. It is now back to a white commy. Basically he was sweet for 3 reasons: 1) colour scheme was an old one (blue and white arrow kinda pattern) 2) Did not use the word Police 3) Light bar was a replica and non-working. When I was talking about it to him he said the second two were required to be legal, and the 1st was good as it put him even further from being had up for 'impersonation'. It also comes down to your behaviour i such a vehicle, if you are going to do anything to make people think you are a cop, or follow cop cars around, or take advantage of people not realising your car for what it is, then you will find yourself in the shit.

Look if you want to impersonate a cop you will have to go to asshole training school first alright!

Y not ask the police themselves! Sure you might get different answers from different cops but will give you a fair idea of what you can and cant do.
