Cam belt slipped ?

motig, Feb 28, 2:14pm
OK parked car up the other night, came out in morning it ran rough for about 30 secs or less then stopped. Garage thought it was electrics but have found belt has slipped. The thing that annoys me is I had a new belt put in 40,000k ago. So is this just bad luck or what!

94 mazda familia 1500. Cant remember what else was done , cost $400 odd

could be that it was never done and you just paid for it. not the first time this happened.check the belt condition writing will be still visible on outside of a belt done 40.000km

I think the 1500 in either the last of the BGs or the start of the BH's will either be the B5 DOHC or the Z5 DOHC - both interference engines.

"So is this just bad luck or what!"

The belt should have been readjusted after about one to five thousand kilometers.

It was probably loose for ages and jumped as you started or as you turned the motor off.

perhaps I could be corrected, I was just under the impression they were. I've definitely seen a B6 DOHC do damage when a cambelt has broken, but unsure about the Z5, and even the B5 DOHC.

Nobody said anything about that

most of the bg familias have non interferance motors they are also pritty common for the key way on the crank to snap and spin the bottom pully so i would check that

alltorque350, Feb 28, 7:00pm
i have seen a couple of times the crank pulley on those engines flogging out the key way. Make sure it's a snug fit.

I'd be looking hard at whenther the keyway is stripped, it takes an incredibly loose cambelt in order for it to jump teeth, loose enough that it would likely be creating noise by contacting the plastic covers over it, especially when idling. It would take a pretty incompetent person to not have tensioned it properly during installation. As for retensioning belts after a period of running, WTF!The vast majority of modern belt drive engines don't even have provision for that without removing all the covers again.Sometimes the tensioner bolts can be accessed through ports in the covers but its extremely rare, the rest use hydraulic tensioners, the failure of which is pretty rare. Not in this case though.

The two engines that autodata said were fitted to that car both had manual adjusters.

If you still have the service record book for the car it will tell you whether the belt needs retensioning at the first or second service.
Although it is not a regular service item they are generally retensioned at the first service from new. often a thousand kilometer service.

If it is meant to be retightened then that it is likely to be the cause of your problem.

What cars are you talking about! I've never struck one that has needed retensioning.

mechnificent, Jun 6, 11:54pm
Well the thousand km service used to say check belt tension when I was in a toyota dealership.

I always run motors at the revs that makes the belt flap around and they always stretch in about five minutes or so of running, then I retension them. Sometimes they are dangerously loose.

Belts can and do stretch, just like fanbelts do. They can jump teeth if they are loose, mostly at turn off or startup.

Perhaps mechanics don't oftenget to hear about it, perhaps they don't want to know, , but it does happen.
