Our Nissan Presage, 8 seater van broke down. Engine failure. We have been given a quote for $2500.00 to repair. We're not car fanatics so do not know whether to pay this much or get another car. What kind of work should we expect done on the car for $2500! Should it be a reconditioned motor for that price! Thanks in advance. Really dont know what to do. We can't afford to buy another car and can only just afford to pay for the repairs. The body is in excellent condiiton. Its a 1999 model.

You really need to give some info on what the repair is.

They said it was the bearings! Don't know much else. When we broke down, the car stopped completely, we waited 10 mins and drove it about 1 minute to the garage and it died again, with the engine making a horrible noise. The mechanic who looked at it said it was the bearings. The oil light, the engine light, everything came on at the time the engine failed.

Sounds like a second hand motor supplied and fitted for that price. What engine is it! Did the garage give you a breakdown of the cost.

OP= $2500 for a second hand motor fitted and all the stuff that goes with it sounds pretty darn ggood to me. You do though need to work out what caused the engine failure in the first place so you can avoid it in future

Lack of oil changes and/or low oil level.

$2500 for a second hand replacement sounds like a pretty reasonable deal. I guess what you have to consider is what the value of the vehicle is going to be once it is done. Being real about it you have a 13 year old van - I have no idea at all about values of such but the question has to be whether it is really worth spending $2500 or whether to flog it off as is and put the $2500 towards something later model.

Yea if you like the van then find out whats gone on and what you are getting and what warranty you will get with the new engine. Most engines stuff out because of overheating, yours maybe another reason, bad luck, it will still cost you alot more to purchase another van. At the end of the day your owne finances will dictate what happens. Good luck to you.
