My butt! 9 cars for the BNT V8s. Not even worth watching. Anybody else think the original NZV8s were better and more popular before they allowed the chequebook racers to make all the changes they wanted thus pricing it out of reach for Mr Average racer.

yogibearz, Jan 14, 7:20pm
Yep. It has not been a gooddecsion to run BNT V8s and super tourers. Only one of them can survive, which will it be ! A handfull of cars and people loose interest. Tv coverage will get dropped and its all going backwards at a million miles an hour.

patiki1, Jan 14, 7:32pm
Bye bye BNT v8s,hello supertourers.Fords have had an advantage for years and the officials did nothing.

chris_051, Jan 14, 7:59pm
Bring back production based NZ touring cars, 2.0l and V8s.

ninja_man, Jan 14, 8:02pm
gt1 is my favorite to watch, just the shear speed of the cars is good to watch. Cant be bothered watching the nzv8's anymore.

kcf, Jan 14, 8:41pm
The BNT V8s *are* the original NZV8's.

elect70, Jan 14, 8:56pm
Half have gone to supertourerswho must be doing something right, some big names in m sport &sponsorsbehind it , & they are going to starta series for all the old NZV8s that are sitting in sheds without aclass to race in .They also have moredriversin the wings once they get more cars next season. .It could have all been different had the 2 camps agreed on 1 formula , still good for fans as plenty of racing to see .

socram, Jan 14, 9:29pm
Totally predictable if you understand that the politics within the higher echelons of the sport are such that they have totally lost touch with the rank and file, let alone the elite.

We had some discussion this weekend, and one point raised by one high profile person, was that the executives of MSNZ are not really executive material, just hard working club people and they do not really have a good grasp of racing at any level, let alone a successful background in either organising, competing, promoting or representing racers.

All the so called saloon "cars in sheds" from any and every era are more than able to be brought out as classics if they so desire, all they need is a platform and an undertstanding from MSNZ that they do NOT need to go through updating rollcages to 2012 specs.

One/two make series are the pits, and apart from Mini Sevens, few have lasted more than a few years. If the grid isn't more than half full at tier one without good reason, then questions need to be asked.

berg, Jan 14, 9:49pm
I'm talking back when it kicked off as a cheap class of track motorsport in NZ.

socram, Jan 14, 9:49pm
Watching it now - down to 7 cars.

berg, Jan 14, 10:03pm
I've given up. Even the Swifts are better to watch today

geedubu, Jan 14, 11:03pm
I've read threads on this with interest.I always assumed that the financial viability of meetings depended on numbers of spectators & at the higher level TV coverage and sponsorship.I gather that in fact the number or paying entrants is the driving force (excuse the pun)!Is that right!

socram, Jan 14, 11:26pm
From a promoters point of view (totally unsponsored.), all our income has to be derived from the drivers/entrants, which is why I am a keen promoter of good grids first and foremost. No such thing as good racing for a spectator, (or the flaggies) if the cars are out of sight for 90% of the lap and there are only 7 cars.
Paying spectators are a bonus, provided the cost of paying gate staff is less than the income derived. So, many low key events, you may well find that you can get in for free!
High profile events can derive a fair bit of income from spectators, but many promoters spend more on advertising than they get in spectator income - particularly if the weather is poor.
All motorsport TV coverage has to be paid for.For us, the deal was with a TV production company who effectively charged us for the production costs and the edited footage was then gifted to Sky TV or TV3.Needless to say, there were times when the racing was filmed, but never edited nor commentary added, as Sky TV hadn't got a slot for it, preferring instead to show 4 year old rugby matches and other overseas footage that Sky had purchased, so the bean counters insist they keep showing the paid footage of overseas sport, rather than the free local stuff.

When one event was shown, it was shown just twice - at 5pm then at 7am the following day only.Cost to us was $3,000 for ten minutes. We got no advertising revenue from the slots they sold either.

So before you ask, there is no way we would ever again pay for TV coverage, having spent thousands over a two season period.Oh, and ahem!, the assistant commentators never got paid either.

Who physically pays for the Tier One coverage is therefore a moot point.

whynot7, Jan 14, 11:52pm
excuse my ignorance mr socram but , dothe bnt v8 folks and the suzi swift folks etc have topay tv3 to show the racing on tv! i thought tv3 wasshowing it because they like car racing and can sell advertising while its on.
i did hear that one catagory of car racing paid money to have there class shown on tv during the hamilton 400but cant remember which one

cowboy110, Jan 15, 12:09am
So excuse my ignorance here but why couldn't the BNTV8's and the super tourers race together! One race but two classes.Boosts the grid numbers and keeps the punters happy.Like berg, I'd be pretty annoyed at watching a race with SEVEN cars.

whynot7, Jan 15, 12:33am
they couldnt play nicely in the same class (bnt v8) imagine the tantrums they would have if there were 2 different classes on the track together. it would be better to watch than 7 taxis followingeach other tho. Ive seen more action in a new world car park

twink19, Jan 15, 12:56am
good grids at Taupo except for Arrow Wheelsonly 4 cars on Sunday

cowboy110, Jan 15, 1:03am
Here's a thought.Chuck the V8 utes in there as well.Awesome.Like a demolition derby but with $200 000 cars.

whynot7, Jan 15, 1:14am
hell yea and the suzuki swifts

socram, Jan 15, 1:33am
Very embarrassing twink! Most of the regular Arrows drivers are saving themselves for the BMW festival next weekend.Three weekends on the trot was not on.Bad timing, but at last the other half of the same series had 27 cars on the grid.Four other classes were also combined into two grids.

socram, Jan 15, 1:43am
Politics.MSNZ vs the breakaways.A combined grid will never happen.

Super Tourers is NOT a sanctioned series (nor is ours), which means that all rules and the administration of those rules has nothing whatever to do with MSNZ,so apart from the usual driving and safety standards, MSNZ have no powers whatever to interfere.

Series rules are series rules and it is up to each series co-ordinator/committee to enforce those rules and modify as they see fit.

Tier 1 races are all sanctioned series and I believe that MSNZ not only takes their usual $25 levy per driver (per meeting), but an additional $25 - because it is a sanctioned series and they can poke their noses in as it suits them.

I would imagine that ALL TV3 motorsport has to be paid for, but I would be very interested to hear from someone who knows.

twink19, Jan 15, 2:38am
the other grids were great. hope next week end will be good.

socram, Jan 15, 2:18pm
The Arrows grid initially had a couple of extra out of town Alfas - but they collided with each other in the Saturday race. One Jag had an engine rebuild and he couldn't find a rolling road in time, another car had an unspecified problem; Porsche ran out of fan belts; Arthur's Alfa was probably tired after the Alfa race - and a couple never made it as they had problems beforehand.Ho hum. That is motorsport. What excuses for tier 1 low numbers!

I'll pop in to HD for a look at the festival as at least they have 350 cars, but outside my budget this year.I'm not that keen running a road GT car, racing against large engined sports racers - getting lapped.
Full grid of F5000s again - that makes it well worth the visit.

Is the yellow peril race ready yet Twink!

gemmigem, Jan 15, 2:33pm
Good Idea , time to stop trying to be like aussie . We don't have the teams or the budgets to be like a baby V8 supercars.

twink19, Jan 15, 2:55pm
yes, thanks, ready to go, for Hamton Downs, did a meet at Taupolast August1.49 first time out
