ok a few of the chev head bolts in the 350 are toast, cleaned up all the threads in the block but when torquing the heads a couple of bolts just spin in the breeze (thought they looked a bit too corroded to use again), who sells head studs, cant afford to get a set of ARP studs yet but want to keep the old tart going till April when it will get torn down again

Eh welcome to earth, I bought a car off a well known guy in my community and it had a blown #4. Bad bearings and the diff turned out to be non lsd plus some chassis damage.
Upon complaining the head honchos defended him and threatened to ban me giving a "technical warning" over the issue. I was fuming and still am, less cause of the damage but more how it was dealt with.

oh starting issues, put in new tilton style reduction starter without shims and isnt engaging (well kind of engaging, spinning on flywheel as the teeth on it are basically flat)), crawled under and yep, flywheel ring gear is stuffed, so new flywheel needed, ( i was wondering why the o.e.m. chev starter wouldnt engage properly either). think i will can it for the rest of the speedway season, only got about 4-5 meets left anyway, bugger

What you are proberly going to need for those studs isa step up/downstud = large thread block on to a small shaft
Get the block drilled & tapped for a larger thread seeing as theres proberly no meat left to work with in the original hole.
Either that or an extra deep cut helicoil thread

i retapped the holes in the block and all went well, the bolts on the other hand arnt the best so i'm thinking (hoping) that the threads on the bolts have failed, was reading on another site how a bloke had drilled and tapped the holes to 1/2" and used head bolts off an oldsmobile, also read the bolts used on a big block are 1/2"so would they be the same length on a small block!, what are the lengths of the bolts on a SBC, should have measured them before i bunged them back in shouldnt i, cant helicoil them as they have been done before and the clowns who owned it before me have wound the hell out of the bolts and ripped the coils including the thread out
