1988 galant vxs

scousemouse, Mar 6, 1:23pm
im currently removing the engine to do the front end,but have noticed it has some sort of adjustable suspension wich has never worked since we have owned it.all the small pipes have been removed from the shocks and tied up.my question is if i remove all this and the unit under the bonnet will it have any adverse effects on the car!

toxicgreen., Mar 7, 2:13pm
If you know those pipes an ajustables never worked and its realy hard to sort system to work then disconecting al pipes and wirering with hav no negetive effect, the adjustable system was always a set of bells an whstles for nothing.

Is that the "Electronic Adjustable" stuff! With buttons on the dash!

Man. that was s gimmick and a half, that one.

phillip.weston, Mar 7, 2:15pm
check if the struts have been replaced with standard units all round. When the adjustable suspension fails it usually always bones the suspension on its ass. It's common to just fit standard non-ECS struts all round and remove the pump and air valves from the car.

Perhaps when it doesn't work, but when they were near new and functioning fine it was a good system. You could adjust the ride height on the fly and also adjust the stiffness of the shocks.

mrfxit, Mar 7, 2:18pm
Are you positive they are original shocks.
Not many cars had adjustables back then & certainlly don't remember that age of galant having them.

Sounds a bit more like it's got ABS brakes either factory fitted (very rare) or someones done a butcher job on it, (means the same thing that it's been butchered)
Either way it shouldn't be getting wof's

neo_psy, Mar 7, 2:18pm
Really! I never noticed any difference.

But then that was a Jap import that had been flogged to within an inch of it's life.

Perhaps the stuff had been removed in that one too. Which would make sense, I suppose.

On a 1988 galant!

phillip.weston, Mar 7, 2:24pm
yes. Factory fitted on the VX-S and the GTi-16V. The same system was on a few of the import mid 80s Sigmas but wasn't quite the full adjustable system. ECS was also fitted to some 7th gen import Galants too, but simply just had a switch for 'touring' mode etc.

Iv seen 1986 japan cars with "sport,normal,comfy"-
suspension settings, they had a solinoid on top of each strut. No ride height ajustment tho .In the long run ya best bet is run it howevr an if prob comes up put $30 used plain strut in each corner

phillip.weston, Mar 7, 2:27pm
it worked very similar to Toyota's TEMS at the time, except I don't think TEMS had the full adjustable ride height control.

cheers for the info, ended up leaving it in.was planning on doing sum work on the beast but i also made the grave mistake of purchasing a 97 mondeo to drive while i repaired the galant, have since learnt my lesson that if it seems to good to be true it probably is.now i have two munted cars in the drive.and yes it was an auto mondeo.yeah i know.

phillip.weston, Mar 10, 1:35pm
uh oh! so what was wrong with the Galant in the end - did the timing belt slip or something!

scousemouse, Mar 10, 1:43pm
yeah pretty sure its the tensioner as i can rock the cam and almost remove the belt but if i turn the engine it gets tight again, thought id remove the engine to do it so i could do the water pump and seals generally give it a good tidy up.not alot of room to work while its in there though.but i have run out of time now.and the garage quoted me 1500 to repair the trans on the mondeo but i figure its only done 120,000 and has already shit a trans so dosnt make sense really.only just finished replacing most of the loom as the engine bay temp baked the wires.

phillip.weston, Mar 10, 1:58pm
Nah you can definitely do the water pump, crank and cam seals with the engine in place on the 4G63. A little bit tricky on one of the cam pulleys but with a jack under the sump you can move the engine up and down where required. Having a rattle gun with swivel joints is handy though. Gutted about the Mondeo, can't say I wouldn't have saw that coming (not). They're a bitch to remove too, the whole subframe has to be dropped down. Not a very well thought out car to repair, give me my Jappas any day when it comes to fixing them.

gonna sell both as is and cut my losses i think,i need to get a car for the mrs pretty quickly.
