Can't afford a Harley, hate filling the car ($140 a pop right now- and do so too regularly) so thought about a scooter to get to work and back. Only want a 50cc or electric! The electric ones on here are for sale at $850- are these any good! Would hate to end up halfway between work and home only to have no charge.50cc is OK, but bet there are plenty Chinese brands to steer well clear of. Other than looking like a tit, and freezing my nuts off in winter, why would I not do this!

scooters suck, I have one so I know, BUT im glad I do! Here was what I was told before i got one, get a decent brand, and if poss try get one with big wheels. So I got a suzuki fx125 scooter with a little twin cam oil cooled motor for going to work and back. $1200 got me one with 9000km, it does 120kph flat out, has 5 gears, 4L of gas gets me about 250km so I cant complain

If you only have a car license, 50cc is it. Avoid the electric ones - to slow. Get a good brand with parts support, and try them out soem are to small for big or tall people. I do more miles on my 50 than the big biktes - back and fowards to work every day for $8 gas per week.

The trouble with 50cc is its not quite quick enough to safely take command of your lane and move with traffic. It is however fast enough to make a real mess it you get collected as someone opens their car door etc.
Definitely worth the extra coin to go and start getting your bike license and do what the other poster says and get a bigger scoot.
Ideally going for bigger wheels is also a help but not essential. Also to reiterate stay with a proper brand and nothing Chinese. Even if that means getting an older scooter.
Because scooters are so basic having a well maintained old one is often a great way to go. Technology hasn't moved foward very much with scooters but quality has dropped off in a lot of brands so those can also be reasons to get a good older one.
Best of luck and don't forget to wear proper safety gear.
BTW, if you have enough money my pick would be a secondhand Piaggio liberty. Piaggio may not sound familiar but they make Vespa and are the definitive manufacturer of scooters.

In 2008 when petrol was high, I bought a 50cc scooter to save fuel but didn't end up using it much. They have put up moped rego since then too.I agree with Jazz's comments.
I tended to find it was easier to cycle as it was easier to stay out of traffic. Also I always had the option of getting my girlfriend to pick me up if the weather was turned really crap or put it the back of a co-workers car if they were going my way.
I was lucky and had showers I could use at work, but tended to find If I didn't cycle too hard I could didn't work up much more of a sweat then walking.Depends how far you are from work. There are bikes with electric assist but I don't know how they good they are.
