I think the model in question is a Cavalier. I also remember hearing that it was the bastard-child of Toyota and a U.S. car company. Chrysler! Basically a Toyota badged piece of junk. The 'Dog and Lemon Guide' is very disparaging from what I remember.

Yes $20 is a good price if it has those two only reliable things that a cavaleir can have, good battery and petrol.I suggest you find a large paddock and THRASH the hell out of it until it shites itself, then stuff a rag in the petrol filler and burn off the excess petrol.

If you were ever going to buy one (god forbid), I would go for the facelift (year 2000) model as a lot of the problems were addressed. The later ones also look a lot nicer, with leather bound steering wheels and trans shifter, wider front wheel arches, crystal headlights, digital odometer, etc.
