Help please, I've done something wrong.

Just changed points, rotor and cap on my Toyota 4Y and now it won't start.Just turns over and wont fire.I set the points gap to o.8, is that correct! What else could I have done wrong! The plug leads are on in the correct order.

Go back over what you disconnected and double check it. Pull it off, put it back on, start with the basics.

Make sure the wire from the points is not earthing out on the dizzy body. done it myself in the past! Also, remove cap and wind over by hand to make sure the points open each time.

maybe a stupid question, but did you gap the points on a lobe !

Might help with points gap!
Is the condensor connected up and if so is it working correctly! A failed condensor/capacitor will make it hard to start.

I gapped it when the rubbing block was 90 degrees to the flat part of the square shaft. Is that the correct way to do it!

bjdw, Jun 30, 1:12pm
And I gapped it to 0.08 not 0.8.

thunderbolt, Jun 30, 1:15pm
Set the gap when the rubbing block is on the lobe.
Or the point of rotation when the points are open the most.
When the flat part of the shaft is aligned with the rubbing block the points should be closed and not touching the shaft.

Had a coffee and tried again, bingo.Maybe I flooded it when I had the gap set at 0.8 instead of 0.08.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Now that you have changed things, have you checked the ignition timing!

Did you grease the lobes on the rotor shaft!

Did you check the dwell angle!

bjdw, Jun 30, 1:34pm
No.
No.
No.

But I have a Haynes manual on order to help me fine tune it.

You need to correct timing(With a timing light) as it can lead to inaudible detonation if too far advanced = hole in top of piston.

Get your local garage to check / adjust timing.may cost $10 - $20 but is cheaper than buying a timing light.

This man knows what's what, although the order is out and may confuse a novice.

Lube, Dwell, Timing.

0.45mm (0.018", generally referred to as 18 thou') for a 4Y. Dwell 46º to 58º. Or 51% to 64% on the duty cycle setting of a digital multimeter if you don't have a dwell meter.

What actually matters is the dwell which is what you set the gap for in the first place. The measured gap is only a starting point - if the dwell is out, adjust the gap to whatever it needs to be to get the dwell right. Dwell too small = gap too big.

The dwell should be steady. If the dwell is erratic, you may need to have the distributor checked as the bearings might be gone or something might be loose or worn (lobes).
