Because it broke the belt! Replace the engine if this is the case, pinched rings due to valves hitting pistons is a the likely result.

Don't bother with a second hand one. 1C motor is the worst diesel Toyota ever made. Get a brand new one, or have a chat to a reconditioner and see if a 2C head will fit. And replace the piston rings, big end and main bearings while the head is off. That's my advice anyway.
