Young guy trying to kill himself I think!

Finished work at 11pm, driving home on a country road so no street lights, come over the brow of a hill at 100kph & here's a young guy, maybe 16-18, standing in the middle of the road in boxers & a t-shirt. He didnt even move. just staring down the road, no acknowledgement of me just missing him, no nothing! I think he may have been trying to commit suicide so I turned around & went back the way i'd come from & stopped just down the road a bit (to warn anyone else coming) & rang the Police & they turned up to deal with him.
Dont know the outcome as I left when they turned up.
Scared the hell out of me!

Boxers and T shirt - what an idiot. Its cold out there.

saxman99, Jun 24, 6:45am
Crikey, that's scary. He could also have been physically or mentally ill I guess.

trader_84, Jun 24, 6:48am
Mate, it does not matter how or why that young guy ended up in the situation he found himself in . he was someones baby, brother and son. He and they can be thankful someone like you 'stepped up to the plate' and carried out an action that probably saved his life. And a lifetime of 'what if' by the poor sod that in another life - would have come along, not seen him and run him over. Good on you dude!

English! Almost like snoopy221

mapman, Jun 24, 7:44am
Yeah nice words & your right of course. I drove line haul for years at night doing the Turangi swap and came across this sort of thing twice. First time it was a van going the same direction as me, then pulling out onto on coming trucks. I got on the R.T to warn everyone and I??

guider1, Jun 24, 7:45am
I did think about stopping & talking to him but I didnt know what state of mind he was in & if it would infuriate him & make it worse or be of help. As there was also a main road about 40m away I didnt want him to get pissed off with me & possibly run onto that road so I thought it best to let the Police deal with it as they can restrain him or whatever needed to be done.

guider1, Jun 24, 7:53am
Thanks for the kind words guys. To be totally honest, at first I was just going to carry on home but then Mr Conscience took over & I thought to myself I really dont want to read about it in the paper knowing I saw him & could've prevented a possible tradgedy. & I feel better for doing so.

snoopy writes in cryptic english, not broken teenager txt-speak english.

crzyhrse, Jun 24, 9:11am
If he was hoping to top himself, you'd think he'd want to make sure he didn't gethypothermia afterward!

elect70, Jun 24, 11:53am
Be a bit of a buggerhaving to clean the mess off the car . Seen results of car vs horse, they used chain saw to cut the horse out of the car , killed the driver .

321mat, Jun 24, 11:55am
One word.P.

johnf_456, Jun 24, 7:03pm
Good on ya, I'd do the same.

xacoon, Jun 24, 7:13pm
was yarning to a truck driver one day who was doing a run north to chch, there is a stretch of road on the plains that is notorious for suicides. anyway this guy said he was driving along, car coming the other way drifted onto his side of the road. last thing he saw before impact was the guy smiling and waving. messed up shit.

dr.doolittle, Jun 24, 7:13pm
What, walk down the road in your jocks!

johnf_456, Jun 24, 7:40pm
What makes you think that, no calling the police and not doing a runner when you could potentially save a life.

mapman, Jun 24, 8:47pm
All you can do is hit the picks, there have been more than one truck driver killed by trying to miss suicidal people in vehicles or not. You talk to any Tanker driver and they will tell you that they will line you up as best they can to square you off in an effort to control the rig in an event with a head-on, on their side of the road. On a state highway with lots of traffic both ways, he will also try not to lock up, preventing a jack-knife and wiping out innocent cars. I totally agree with this too & would do the same. I??

Many years ago the father of an ex g/f was driving for NRM. He was crossing a bridge up north somewhere in his Mack pulling a 4 axle trailer & an oncoming car pulled out to overtake another car. He swerved to avoid it & (luckily for him) ran off the side of the end of the bridge down through a deep drain where the trailer parted company from the truck & the truck came to rest in the paddock still on it's wheels.
He said he vaguely caught sight of something but couldnt really say what it was because in all the panic he was trying not to roll the truck. Then he suddenly remembered there was a cyclist on the bridge too but he had vanished. until he got out of the truck & there was the cyclist, or should I say the remains of a dismembered one, all wedged up under the left hand side of his truck.
I was living there at the time & I can remember hearing him waking up yelling & crying from nightmares & flashbacks.
It took him a long time to drive a truck again.

i know the driver well, in fact i saw him this week. at the time he took it hard despite doing everything he could to avoid her, in fact he ended up in the drain on the other side of the road. the woman had been living in her car for several days after her boyfriend threw her out. i was there just after it happened in fact the first ambulance arrived just after me.

matthew111, Jun 25, 10:21am
you did the right thing

mapman, Jun 25, 11:54am
You were probably there 5 or 10 minutes before me . I didn??
