Cracked head?

treesure, Jun 21, 5:20am
i think its the radiator, dp is sure its the head - how can we tell the difference!. also does the m.i.t students do work on your cars cheaply in order to learn!

phillip.weston, Jun 21, 5:32am
and the car is! what are the symptoms!

planted4u, Jun 21, 5:34am
I thought that this was another thread about John

symptoms are: fill up radiator and it leaks. i filled it up one day -(didnt drive it that day),then without checking it again drove about 2km and it overheated and radiator was empty.

gilco2, Jun 21, 6:32am
what make/model car. When you filled radiator, you say it leaked. was coolant in big puddle on ground to conclude that.

Is the car at Waihi Beach!

If so the guy that owns George's Auto Services in Katikati lives at Waihi Beach and might be able to stop in and diagnose it on his way home if you ask nicely. He is a good bloke and a good mechanic.

If you provide more information you may get a better idea of things from here though too.

Poster #1 in general , wants a quick fix & pay nothing, ! Noanswer to make & model !,expectinganswers in here is answering questions , time waster .

treesure, Jun 21, 9:36am
strobo im not a time waster - i have been busy this morning, if that is ok with you!
the make is a mazda familia 95model.when i say it leaked, it didnt pour straight out, but it obviously drained as i filled it up one day and then the next it was empty (without driving it anywhere).on another occasion i filled radiator drove about 15km it overheated - i refilled radiator - then drove about 15km it overheaded again & i noticed that water was running out from under the car.i apologise if this is vague i am not mechanically minded in the slightest and i thought perhaps there were definite indications of whether there is a problem with radiator or its a cracked head!.and yes, i would like to pay nothing - although i realise that is not an option!.thanks to all who reply constructively.

treesure, Jun 21, 9:37am
car is not at waihi beach, i am now in waiuku, but yes i know the guy at georges auto garage he is my friends uncle and your right - a top bloke!.

intrade, Jun 21, 9:41am
dont know if you propperly overheated it then it will havea blowen headgasket or craked head. some mazda crack heads real easy like the capella 626 telstar 2.0 literIt wont be a cheap fix in any case . make the assesment if the car is rusty etc if its worth to fit a new engine and radiator before you start . If its not then you can sell it or scrap it be 100 to 200$ worth of scrap metal minus tyres and battery.

tekaholics, Jun 21, 9:45am
may be you just need to replace a hose! dont think it could be a cracked head. Or just put stop leak in your radiator. see what that does, its only a temporary solution.

tekaholics, Jun 21, 9:52am
could be cheaper just to get a pressure test done to see if it really is the head.

tekaholics, Jun 21, 9:59am
check your oil doesnt have coolant in it, or water. It will be like milky white. If it does then your head is cracked. In the car I mean.sori.

treesure, Jun 21, 10:10am
i know MY head is cracked - its the car im worried about!

strobo, Jun 21, 10:58am
Initially before a pressure test ,The best way is add water to the radiator slowly while the engine is cold &engine running @ idle speedto see where it is leaking from, ( quick visual) run engine with the radiator cap offto at least operating temp , purge air inthe water by squeezing the top hose in & outwatching the filler inlet hole where the rad cap goes the water level will rise & fallwith each squeeze of the top hose, ,with a happy level check for the likes of lemonade type bubbles , lots of little bubbles rising will indicate head gasket or cracks, be wary though of boiling hot water likely to gush out without warning,At idle with a slight increase of engine revs the waterlevel rise & fall will indicate the water pump is working fine . Really you need intelligent deductions with knowledge you do not have!nor the equipment required to do the job, IF the water is pissing out as you say it will be obvious where it is leaking from anyway.Your best bet is getting a local qualified automotive technician actually to inspect thecar &toadvise you, from there normally free forinfo thats reliable ,unlike the unqualified opinions offered in here.
