Thought I was THE MAN when I scored

mykyva, Jun 16, 5:14pm
a 5 year old Heshbon 4 post hoist with 2 centre jacking beams, a Heshbon wheel balancer & a Hoffman tyre changer all in working order on TM for $7500, that was until I got the sparky's bill in the mail for wiring it all up.$5500! F%#%^$k me!

v8_mopar, Jun 16, 5:16pm
3 phase right :)

mykyva, Jun 16, 5:18pm
correct.

v8_mopar, Jun 16, 5:20pm
I did a shed not long ago and that cost lots to. Sparty said if it was just single it would have been a 1/4 of the cost

woody1946, Jun 16, 5:24pm
Sparky's & Plumber's licence to print money

lookoutas, Jun 16, 5:27pm
If it was single it would cost nothing.
Whoops - not allowed to do that are we!
"My garage door opener works without sparking"
Would love a hoist at home.

And when I first scored - I was a man.

zephyrheaven, Jun 16, 5:48pm
to wire up the new workshop for 4 hoists & a compressor (3 phase) was $2800 - $900 of that was cable! Yikes, love you insurance co

Don't forget dentists.

mugenb20b, Jun 16, 6:17pm
That's true. I recently spent over $2k on my teeth, and I roughly calculated that my dentist gets paid $400 per hour. I'm in the wrong trade.

gilligan2, Jun 16, 6:19pm
I just spent 985 today there

johnf_456, Jun 16, 6:24pm
You just have to love it when they ask how come we haven't seen you in awhile Mr. Just about need a personal loan every time you visit.

v8_mopar, Jun 16, 6:30pm
the dentist is an easy one

drink your whiskey straight and brush you teeth

Now how does that work for the sparky

mugenb20b, Jun 16, 6:31pm
Yes, and I feel like telling them to bring their car in for some "preventative maintenance" work.

rob_man, Jun 16, 7:14pm
Our hoist at work is 3 phase. I was looking at it and thinking about putting one in at home when it occurred to me that seeing it is only a 2HP motor there is no reason you can't fit a single phase motor to it.
It doesn't need to be multi-directional, it only drives a hydraulic pump.

rlr29, Jun 16, 7:17pm
Don't forget that.

The sparky has put has name on the line that he's done a good job, that it's not going to burn itself to crap and cost him his balls.

mykyva, Jun 16, 7:24pm
true that, I know he did a great job, just didn't budget for that much lol! I should have asked for a quote 1st. Thankfully he's letting me pay the bill off in three monthly installments

sallyjoy, Jun 16, 7:25pm
3 phase shouldn't cost more. Its only one extra wire, and you can use smaller wire for the same hp compared to 1ph so it should work out similar. 3ph should be cheaper in the long run to, the motors don't have switches in them to fail and they're more efficent. switchboard might be a bit dearer though.

rlr29, Jun 16, 7:29pm
And there's probably no reason to use a 2hp motor either, with the right valving it might be slightly slower but it'll work right.

ola_bitchola1, Jun 16, 7:40pm
umm think again buddy its more than 1 extra wire 3 phase wires a neutral and a earth thats a extra 2 as you need a neutral on a balanced load

bit of info foryou all 3ph motors have different torque curves than single ph and are generally more compact than a single phase of the same output and are generally more efficient

sallyjoy, Jun 16, 7:56pm
neutral needed for unballanced loads.

mykyva, Jun 16, 10:45pm
honest to who! wow thats a good price

pollymay, Jun 21, 1:53am
I need another hoist, I have 2 just for maintaining my own cars
