Merc A-class

I'm toldthe gearboxes give problems on the Merc A class. Is this throughout the range (ie most popular in NZ 160 and 190!). These were available since the late nineties, have Mercedes replaced or improved the gearbox on later models (I'm thinking 2003 onwards)!
Cheers

They are a horrible little car anyway and I say that as a Mercedes owner and someone who will give any small Euro worth its salt a fair go.

Don't be fooled by it supposedly being a Mercedes a much cheaper 2000 or newer Punto is a better appointed and much nicer car.

Grab a Punto instead, nicer car same price to buy and no worries about expensive repairs. the Punto is about as reliable and cheap to fix as you can get in a car of that price and sophistication.

They run the same gearbox as some fwd Peugeot, Citroens and Alfas, common to shit themselves as the cooler ontop of the box leaks internally. Good luck finding a 2nd hand box for one.

Agree all round.

Punto wins over A Class Merc.

Run, dont look back, Starters, autos engine mts, ecu's, instrument clusters, turn to custard regularly. Buy a nice reliable toyota corolla.

These were the vehicle that screwed MB's reputation, along with that silly American built M class thing that was no good at anything, and a few other blunders with other models at the time that had wiring looms that started to biodegrade. And a top example of how NOT to make a small car.Loads better options on the market sorry.
