Why spend heaps of money on turning a classic motor vehicle into something you won't even drive except onto a trailer and then loose heaps of money doing it! I just dont understand but would love to hear why.

two words, International Collectors. If you do it properly and its a desirable enough car you won't lose anything, if you play your cards right you will make on it.The skills of kiwi restorers are well reknowned worldwide and the work involved to do it here is cheap compared to other countries, its only hotrodders that butcher things and do strange mods that lose economically. (puts helmet on)!But you're right, cars are for driving and ownership of concourse vehicles can't really be fun at times.

I wouldnt put a 350 in a gullwing mercedes for instance, but I would sbc a trabant in a second!

Yes every old car should be hot rodded and be made to be driven. Preferably with speed and lots of sound.

Delete Thread. I bet genuine GT-HO owners would be laughing at this post. Loosing money. I would be happy to spend a bit on one and get 300k for it.

Don't know if I'd brand hot rodders "butchers". There is some incredible work to be seen there, just as you say the NZ restoration scene is respected world-wide.
The mods rodders do is obviously to their individual taste which is what makes them cool.
I have to admit I'm a sucker for originality though. Which is how I keep mine. :-)

delete thread! why! I amsemi purist I guess, something that is tidy I like to see restored, something that needs a major amount of cabbages thrown at it, rod it. I would love to find a rotting model a ute to rod, couldn't bring myself to chop a minter. confused! I am.

ok maybe dont delete. But purists arent wankers. I must say i respect them alot

xacoon.I'm not confused at all. I'm the same really. I guess the irony of that though is it'd be more sensible to rod a car that's already in good nick to start with (a good base = less work).

Yeh but I would just feel like a bastard doing it I guess. I like the heritage side of things, grew up in a house that is 140 years old, kauri, 21 rooms and a 13 foot stud, and it gave me an appreciation for the heritage side of things. I couldnt butcher this house as it is one of the very few homesteads that hasn't been butchered over the years, if it wasn't original I wouldn't care what happened to it, but it is a piece of history and I want to see it maintained, thats where I got my view on vehicles I guess.
