It is a myth. I live in Wellington and some parts look like GHETTOS. All the crap thrown onto the footpath, road, banks. Rubbish day is like a nightmare in some part of the city. Crap everywhere. The problem .dirty pigs eating their crap fast food and then just throwing the litter all over the place. No respect as citizens of Wellington and no respect for NZ. The WELLINGTON CITY COUNCILdo nothing.they just take ya rates money and blow it on shite.

Glass can be a danger as cyclist may swerve to avoid glass and that way danger themselves in the traffic. I thought about an idea of having some sort of rotating brushes on front of my wheels. When I would see glass I would just pull a lever and these brushes would sweep away the glass from front of my tyres.

Simple chain gangs, so they are all on a length of chain to each other. They make them work in other parts of the world so why not nz, rather than make them.sit on their bum all day
Here is an idea for some fit but poor person who are on some benefit. Get a trailer behind your bicycle and have a sign like Neigbourhood Roadside Clean, donations accepted. I am sure people would give donations if they see someone doing it regularly.

Condition of receiving the dole. 20 hours community service each week. This wouldn't be limited to picking up rubbish. We are paying them anyway so may as well get some use out of it!Some incentive to get off the benefit as well.

would make sense. or even 8 hours a week - thats only 1 day a week. leaves plenty of time for "job interviews" and "courses"or playstation and xbox and t.a.b.

Will parents get childcare subsidies while they do their community service!

Yeah but not everyone is on the benefit through no fault of their own, the job market is very competitive at the moment in a lot of industry's. Make the crimes do it, free labour if they don't like it tough.

The councils around where I live are just useless. They seem only intent on wasting money on their own perverse ideas and driving the district into bankruptcy.
Oh, and lying to parliament about what they spent the flood relief money on.

Until the 60's/70's they used to do so around the Central Plateau.

Take them with them if they are old enough. many hand make light work.Might even teach them something about a work ethic.
I'm of the firm belief that people shouldn't have children if they are going to rely on the state to fund their upbringing.Of course people hit hard times, I'll accept that, but there are many out there that rely too heavily on others giving them a helping hand.
Bit off topic, apologies.

There are occasionally some trasures amongst the trash.
Yesterday I found money first time since leaving Bluff. A 20 cent coin which I may frame as my lucky coin. Then I found pieces of metal like two 50mm diameter x 200mm long steel rods! Might be worth another 20c each weighing about one kg each!
Then I found a pirate flag which may be some use some day!
Those items are obvoiusly the things fallen from back of the truck!

I pick up others peoples rubbish almost daily from the front of our property. We are rural but just the right distance for the takeaway munchers to toss their garbage onto the roadside.Have caught a taxi driver some years ago emptying his ashtray and rubbish onto our frontage.I leapt the fence, picked it up along with the gravel and dirt, threw it back into his open window of his car.Have not seen him since.I get so sick of the bottles in particular, glass is so dangerous.Have mown over one or two bottles when tidying up the frontage.Have collected plastic bags which get into my stocks water troughs. The tossers must live in some pretty filthy places to think it is normal to just dump the junki.

Good one throwing it back. Reminds me when I was riding my bike in Christchurch on Ferry Road a few years ago. Some driver tossed out a burger wrapper out of the open roofwindow. I stopped, picked it up and caught with him on the next traffic lights. Then I knocked the window, threw the wrapper back into his car from the roof window and said to him that you dropped this. His face impression wasworth a good laugh :-)

Cycling is not that dangerous. I drivers amd cyclists do not make stupid mistakes, all should we fine.
I will start another thread about cycling safety as this is about rubbish on the roadsides.

I wonder how much revenue the cops make from booking these litter-bugs!
I remember walking about 500 mts along a main road to collect my car, and was amazed at the junk & rubbish in that short distance.
