Mini pricing.

Very quietly Mini NZ have reduced their prices. You can now buy a brand new Mini One (really a detuned Cooper) for $27900 and JCW's are $5k less than last month - mind you they were nearly $60,000.

yea well if no one buys them they got to drop the price. people have no work and no money sure as hell aint gona buy a new car for this sort of money even 27k is to much a mini should cost 8 grand to 12k for a cooper if they want sales.

Looks like they're trying to position it just under the Polo TSI/GTI which makes sense

hpaul, Jun 11, 3:14pm
You may be right with the TSI but the Polo GTI is $16k cheaper than a JCW - not really comparable though, Polo goes up against the Cooper S which is now $42,900 - still $5k more than a Polo. I'd pay the extra though.

I meant the base Mini is slightly under a TSI now, and the Cooper (not S) is slightly under a Polo GTI.I know they're not really comparable in performance but I think people do cross-shop them.

no but a dacia sandero is about 12 grand brand spanking new sold only in euro but the duster is suposedly going in production as right hand steerduster is the suv for 18 grand nz should scare the market a fair bit if they beat the likes of ssangyoung and all.

Don't forget that they have to compete against the Fiat 500 which arguably win's in the retro-shiek department and starts around $29,995.

You can get a cheap stripped out version as a base model in the UK that is cheaper than the MiniOne, which is available for about 6 or 7K GBP, if they could get those on the market here for $16K and got a decent sized sales and service network up and running like was the case with the original Mini they would sell by the boatload, but it probably won't happen.Thats what you get when you have BMW dealers in charge of distributing them, high prices and and a small exclusive dealer network, this IMO has been a barrier to much greater sales. The product is good, well liked and resale values are good but hasn't got quite the market focus that it should have.

You can't buy it in the UK for 6 or 7k, the cheapest UK Mini is the 'Mini First' and it's 11,800 GBP + ORC so about $12,500 on the road, almost directly comparable to current Mini One pricing in NZ. They sell Mini as a premium brand (compare one to a 'normal' budget hatchback and you can see and feel the difference) hence higher pricing, despite that UK sales average around 1000 Mini's per week every week of the year.

I stand corrected, yes the current list price is that, there was an introductory special I'm sure, you could buy them at least for a while for less than 10K.Obviously having driven both MiniOnes and Coopers its clear they aren't intended to compete with similar sized entry level cars on the market, but it's debatable whether the quality level you are actually getting is worth the significant premium, mind you that is no different to other BMW product.I still say that it is far too expensive for what it is and a NZ$16-20K pricetag would shift a much larger volume of them, again this won't happen here.
