Slow at starting

hi, i have a p10 primera witha sr20de in it. it is slow at starting, especilly when cold. has 1 month old plugs and leads changed at same time. when running it goes great. if i roll start it, it starts up easy. is the starter giving up! it has 284,000 kms. i have fitted a new battery yesterday.

yeah probably, that model is notorious for chewing starter motors.

Make sure you battery is charging properly it will be slow starting if the battery is draining down to the battery not charging. Takes 5 seconds and it will eliminate it, nothing worse than replacing things to find out its not the problem. Then look at the starter.

battery is charging at 14.2 volts when running. with engine off, battery is at 12.7 volts. start cranking goes down to 9.8 volts. can leave radio going allday with engine off and it will still crank the same.

Check your earth connections and made sure they are all tight, including the ground from engine to chassis.

Yep, check your connections.
But as franc says, get you starter checked out as its damn common for them for give up.
Also check connections at the starter and make sure that the battery terminals are clean, tight and free from corrosion.

Oh, and a basic rebuild of an SR starter is cheap as chips.especially if you can remove and refit yourself.
They aren't too hard to get at.sit at the back under all the inlet gear.
Easiest to get to from under the car.

i have been given another starter from a mate. it needs new bushes as they are worn. the brushes are in good cond. i will put new bushes in it and then swap them over. will check all earth connections tomorrow at lunch.

put other starter in. cranks like it has a fully charged battery, 2nd hand starter works well but still takes a while for the engine to actually start.

new oil + all filters been replaced.
