Get yourself a set of Metrinch spanners, they handle all sizes, both metric and imperial. Have had a set for years absolutely bloody brilliant.

Sounda like 13mm or 1/4 Whitworth if its earlt 50's or older. (Whitworth is measured by the thread OD as opposed to the size of the head).

1/2" = 12.7mm 9/16" = 14.29mm so 13mm or maybe 14mm.

Maybe, but I'll go with the 1/4 Whit camp but seeing the bolt will measure 5/16 or 8mm there's even more confusion about what is needed.
Besides, the nut will by now be rounded off and the knuckles scraped raw so it's unlikely any 12 point wrench or socket will work so unless 6 point tooling is available it's get out the vicegrips time.

If it's an imperial sized nut no amount of qualifications will convince it to be metric.

But a suitable hammer will.

Thanks for the feedback, did try the obvious metric options. Nut and bolt is on the drive shaft of a 58 Morris. will try the 1/4 w or maybe find a Metrinch spanner set. Thanks

they will be 1/4wfor sure. They are getting harder to find now but I found a set of koken 3/8 drive sockets and double endedspanners in a second hand shop for $30

Some cars had 21/32 nuts, which I suppose is an AF version of a Whitworth size. There may be a 17/32 size also. Guys used to open up open-ender spanners to make a non-standard size. Not so good if the nut is tight. Don't Vice Grip make an adjustable spanner which grips quite tight!

Avondale markets on a Sunday morning, plenty of whitworth for sale over in front of the grandstands

I've still got a full set of Whitworth spanners and sockets, help I must be getting old!

I don't recall ever owning any, all the AF sizes for sure but whenever I came across a Whitworth the crescent came into its own and the bolt would be replaced with something sensible like UNC or UNF so my spanners would fit.

Ditto here , but I tend to avoid the type of cars that they fit.
