bubbles52, Jun 2, 7:18pm
what do you do with these, i have a medium size talk skinny oxy bottle with oxy in it i want to get rid of, dont know what to do with it, any ideas!

ralphdog1, Jun 2, 7:25pm
Paint it orange and put it in the line the next time you see some road cones

ml6989, Jun 2, 7:28pm
Write "US Air Force" on it, find it buried in your garden and then call Campbell Live for a story. You probably get some free publicity for your efforts!

bubbles52, Jun 2, 7:29pm

BOC no longer fill the DX cylinders, I doubt you will be able to sell them any longer, I heard that Super Gas will still fill them but if no one in your area will you can take them to BOC and they will take them off your hands

intrade, Jun 3, 6:43am
dont bring em back do boc! all they do is scrap them and rub there hands on renting you a set for almost 600$ rent ayear . supagas fills and tests Dx bottles you can also sell them for a few $$ all bottles that stay in service will make sure boc cant get the monopoly. I just filled my set of Dx with supagaswas 160$ for oxy and acetilen thats tousend times better then to pay boc 16$ rent a month

thejazzpianoma, Jun 3, 7:45am
Yep sell it! Someone will buy it to fill at Supagas.
Its good to spread the word about what BOC are doing as well, they were trying to play dirty through having a near monopoly which is just not on.
Supagas are great, not only are they providing a better cheaper service they are putting pressure on BOC to play fair and are a much nicer place to deal with. Not sure what other BOC centres are like but the guy who served me the last time (which literally was the very last time) was an arrogant twat to say the least.
Supagas by comparison were friendly and helpful and didn't talk down to me because I was just a home user.

easygoer, Jun 3, 8:59am
A couple of facts, BOC rental on a size D is $15.46 per month including GST which means a set will rent for $371.22 per year, BOC are interested in money the same as every business in the country, cost to swap size D Oxygen and Acetylene with BOC is $175.64, fill pressures also need to be compared, BOC fill oxy to 20000KPA (the higher pressure means more gas in the cylinder) check the Supagas pressure, either 15200KPA or 17500KPA, you can't judge the service level based on one outlet, that may just be one bad employee and yes our store is also a BOC agent

electro2000, Jun 3, 11:35am
I find the rental with Boc and super gas pretty much the same as well as the fill, the only differance is super gas will fill owner bottles

thejazzpianoma, Jun 3, 1:25pm
Good point on the Oxy and Acetylene however many home users go years without needing a refill so its still viable.

In terms of my owner bottle supagas argoshield. My 10 year certed bottle paid for itself in about 2 1/2 years at BOC rates and now it costs me nothing. My fill cost is also very low because Supagas pointed out I could buy a bigger bottle for the same purchase price but the big bottle costs half as much to fill.

There is making a profit and playing dirty. BOC have been busy trying to establish a monopoly, if you have a look at their document files held with the commerce commission its clear to see.

If it were not for supagas if you wanted to run any gas welding equipment properly you would need to hire a bottle in NZ. Thats just not right as a matter of principle regardless of the economics.

I am not promoting BOC or putting down Supagas but a lot of the negative advice about BOC is unfounded, agreed they had the monopoly for many years and used that to their advantage but now with Supagas around they are competitive, the prices I quoted are retail and paid by home and small time users, larger users are paying cosiderably less for their gas in a lot of cases, re larger cylinders costing less to fill this has been the case with BOC since I have been dealing with their gases (14 years), it mainly applies to Oxygen and Argoshield gases, the customers swing to Supagas when they slash prices then as the price increases BOC have a drive and buy them back, happens every couple of years in Hamilton, BOC will fill private cylinders except the DX cylinders the ownership of which are misunderstood by the majority but that is another story which I don't want to debate, owning your own cylinder is definitely the best option for the home user as you have pointed out

thejazzpianoma, Jun 3, 7:49pm
I agree its not fair for people to misrepresent what companies do and people definitely do unfairly criticize some aspects of BOC's operation.

However they clearly have customer service issues, we are not talking just the odd bad egg that any company could have but some properly caustic and blatantly rude staff.

What worries me though is that they really only seem apt at running things along the lines of how Telecom and British Airways did/do. Where they work on a ruthless model of domination as opposed to getting customers to want to deal with them.

As a customer even if they were cheaper than Supagas I still wouldn't shop there. I don't appreciate being treated like annoying scum which is how I was made to feel even though my request was reasonable and I was actually looking to spend hundreds of dollars then and potentially tens of thousands in the next few years. (I was also enquiring about dry ice in massive quantities)

Cant stand an arrogant twat, specially wen its on a guy!

mrfxit, Jun 4, 11:16am
Totally agree.
I have hired for many years & owned my own bottles for many more years now.
BOC haven't been very helpfull EVER without paying through the nose first.
NZIG (now BOC) were a helpfull bunch untill near the end of the buyout of the original company.

Mesco/ Air liquid & supergas have either been, helpfull or very helpfull, far in excess of what I have experenced with BOC

easygoer, Jun 4, 7:17pm
My opinion is no more biased than yours, in fact I would hazard a guess that it is less biased than yours, I don't work for BOC and as I said we are an agent for BOC, our store is an Engineering supplies store and we handle gas exchange cylinders on a commission basis for BOC, I would be interested to know what you are referring to when you say my example is rediculous, please elaborate, you made an ussumption that I was a BOC gases salesman but you are a long way off the mark and I would hazard a guess you would not be so brave and nasty if we were face to face, your attitude reminds me of a saying from my Father, never argue with kids or fools
