I Have a mate who had one (SWB) & he painted it matt black from aerosol cans. Best thing he ever did. Every panel almost looked straight & It didnt look too bad after that.

Repower is the first thing that springs to mind. Plenty had the good old 186 Holdens grafted into them, but now the options are endless. Rust killed a few but they seem to go anywhere. My uncle had one as a farm hack about 35yrs ago.

you realise that thing wont ever get a wof its rotten to the corei can even tell from the pictures the doors are about to fall off it its got the tipical rot from the 2 different materials alloy and metal and it looks like its been driven in salt water . the chassy be full of holes also

That pretty much sums it up, it will need to be stripped back to the firewall and chassisto getcompliance. And then you'll have to get the conversion compliant.Brakes!If you are going to go that far choose something thats a lot more original.Much easier.

I bought a 1979 s3109 petrol with a lagre deck and stock crate a few months ago for $1400. 87000kms on the clock with a log book of all work done over the years. I put it on farm rego while it still had a WOF as its not gunna be going far.The clutch was slipping so have replaced that , now this week a brake cylinder started leaking so a quick pull apart and clean up with a scotch brite pad (couldnt find any fine wet and dry in the garage) put it back togeather and no more leak.Slow noisybut sort of cool cheap fun.

There's nothing wrong with the standard set-up if you approach it on it's own terms.A well maintained Landrover is a quite reliable vehicle for it's age and price.When you play with them odd things can happen.That said, there's much more work required than for a modern vehicle, but for SII or later all parts are readily available.SI are a bit trickier.I run a SII as a daily runner and it gets used for what it was built for

You can buy disco s cheapi Ibought95 3.9 V8 $1600all good.Got more creature comforts than the landy . Even Rangies are cheap, owners worried about fuelrunning costs& selling them .

The coil sprung models are a long way removed from the leaf sprung Landrovers in almost every respect and very capable vehicles.Unfortunately, up until BMW and then Ford got hold of them they are very much a product of the British automotive industry.
On the fuel consumption, both the V8s and Series 2.25 petrols consume fuel, prodigiously and in equal measure.There's a few things you can do to moderate the 2.25's consumption, but they still have a thirst.

Weber carb, gives about 10% improvement over a good Zenith, and20% over a bad one or a Solex.Replace the fan with an electric one, another 10%, and a huge help if you 're going through water a lot.There's overdrives or high ratio transfer boxes, but they cost a lot and are either unreliable (some overdrives) or present other problems.The overdrive negates a PTO, or you're effectively taking off in second with the HR box.
Just keeping the maintenance up makes a huge difference, having the driveshaft greased and in good nick does a lot.The same for diff oils.Extending the breathers on both diffs and the gearboxes keeps water out of them and prolongs the life of the oils.Once they get water in the oil it creates a lot of drag and that chews fuel.

Actually the old famous non turbo 2.4 toyota 4cyl diesel donk CAN be fitted to em. And that engine in a diesel(the landy was originaly a diesel landy) landy will damn near go anywhere.that four skinny chained mud grippin wheels can go.which rules out a lotta fat footed late model 4x4's

Ran a 1958 SWB Series IIA for ten years as an everyday driver and all round gofor vehicle.As bought it was a worn out wreck but I took it down to the chassis and rebuilt it - a lot of manual work but technically a piece of cake.Parts were available no problems.
Kept the original 2.25l engine - underpowered for the open road [especially into a head wind!], but performance and fuel econ was improved by fitting a pancake air filter to the Solex carb.Free-wheeling hubs were a must.Replaced the diffs with Rover car items - better fuel econ at the expense of initial acceleration.
Golden Rule: keep up with the oil changes and maintenance - which is easy.
The most reliable vehicle I've ever owned - never let me down - not once.

Heaps of fine threaded7/16 bolts n nuts that rust ,non anodized metal , the nuts are not capulated ! lol,Unless it is a low chassis number ,of collectors value , stay away from them , Good parts are harder to find now days,They are a by gone era , They were great at the timebeforethe landcruisers & patrols .not even for memories sake would i ever own one again! save time & money,the advantages i would give theoldlandroverovermodern vehicles is the detachable doors,hood , slide windows,drop down windscreen ,fuel tank under drivers seat( no spillage filling from gusty side winds lol) ,the alloy panels , pity the chassis tho! best thing is the lack of electronic guffery stuff.
The rest of the Glencoyne site is very informative too, but remember it in England and their rust problems are magnified by the salting of roads in winter.
The page about the 200Tdi conversion without the turbo looks interesting, as is the warning about high ratio (3.54) diffs, you won't get the handbrake to pass a warrant and it stuffs the low range.
I'm looking into a new air filter at present, haven't figured out what yet, but want something along the lines of a Defender or V8 setup.
Getting rid of the belt driven fan on any older vehicle will give that sort of efficiency gain, all modern vehicles have electric ones for that reason.Sometimes I wonder if Landrovers weren't secretly propeller driven, with the size of the fan on them.

A Landrover has a very good layout and practical design, that's why it's basically unchanged after 50 years, it can't really be improved and it works for owners.I've kept mine because it keeps working for me, I don't need to care about the cosmetics, it's well used, I can throw tools and assorted shit in the back.It doesn't matter it they are dirty or bleeding everywhere, hose fixes that.
