the bar contraption that you put across an engine bay, to lift the side of an engine up! (not a hoist)

Perhaps you mean an engine support beam!
I don't know that they lift one side of the motor though, but I guess that you could lift it with a trolley jack and use the beam to support it in place.

If the one your talking about is the one you hold the engine in place when its off its engine mounts or when the subframe is out etc we called it an engine brace.
I call mine a fence post - seriously a length of 100 x 100 fence post and some chain.Cost me about 10 bucks!

Mine is just a block and tackle that hangs from the carport :P Bloody heavy and noisey, But i can lift a whole sw20 MR2 from it, so, im happy
